Hurricane Preparedness

I live on the Gulf Coast, so hurricanes are always a concern this time of year. As we check our disaster preparedness kits, I’ve been giving some thought to what should be in a disaster preparedness kit for birds.

At least:

Airline kennels/travel cages for each bird or cage of birds
Towels for clean up and handling panicky birds (and nets if you have little guys like finches or flighted birds)
Sufficient bottled water for each bird for at least 5 days
5 days of dry food (seed, pellets) per bird, in watertight containers
Sufficient cans of salt-free canned veggies and juice-packed fruits for 5 days per bird
Manual can opener
Corn starch in a watertight container
Waterproof tarp (to cover kennels if needed)

Other things:

Apple Cider Vinegar or GSE (to clean and to treat water in stressed birds)
Small scissors
Pliers (in case of broken blood feathers)

Can anyone think of anything else that would be crucial? Important? Desirable?

(Of course if you have chicks or are hand feeding the whole thing gets much more complex…)

That seems pretty comprehensive. I guess the only thing I would change would be the canned goods..I'd use dehyrated veggies/fruits. Less bulk/weight should you have to evacuate. JMHO

I'd add Pure Ivory soap to stop broken blood feathers, a bottle of Vitamin E oil incase stress caused one fo them to pluck and multilate at all (wonder oil that stuff is)

and some extra long matches with the tips cut off and some bandies incase of any sprains or broken bones in stress.

Batteries and some nightlights also would be in my kit if i had one. Stressed birds fright so badly.

Poor you, hurricanes must be nasty stuff

The guy down the road from where my mom lived, said that before the hurricanes last year there were only pidgeons that would fly up to the 20th floor on his building. After those hurricanes came up the other year it brought some wild Sunnies into the area. I found this out when i went over to pick up my babysitting tab from him and he pointed at Jean and went, "That's the little ****** who keeps screaming on my window sill every morning" (he flies down for business every so often) and he started laughing. I suppose if I had to sit there on that floor without the ability to open my window to shoo the noisy birds away I'd dislike em too XD.

To add to your list:

Anti Stress seed formula
A toy for each bird, to distract em and keep their mind active in their carrier
A small battery operated radio in case you have no power for the birds and you
Small emergency batteries for a warming light in case it's cold or your birdy caught a cold
A book on homiopathic care if you're inexperienced in dealing with bird illness or injuries if a vet is unavailable to try and help your bird hang on until you can get it to a professional.

That's all I can think of
