nail polish?

i know there are SO many things harmful to the fids, so i am always sure to make sure something is safe or unsafe if i dont know.

im wondering... is the smell of nail polish harmful to fids?
if i were to paint my nails in the same room shadow was in, could it put him in any danger?

Well IF I polished my nails, I would do it far away from Sydney. When Donna does hers, she does them in the bathroom with door closed and exhaust fan running.

Toxic List

This isn’t a complete list by any means. Be aware of anything with a strong smell and just don’t use it if in doubt. Another thing to be aware of is things going on in your neighborhood….if someone is painting or grilling out…..if there is a lawn chemical company spraying yards, please make sure windows and doors are closed.
Please read all labels of cleaning items that you use in your house …most are toxic to birds.

Now The List

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Asbestos
Ammonia
Bleach/Chlorine
Carbon Monoxide
Cigarette Smoke
Diazanon
Dryer Sheets
Fabreeze
Flea Bombs/Collars
Topical Flea Killers (such as the drops you put on the dogs and cats)
Floor Polishes
Formaldehyde (new rugs and some materials need to be aired out before bringing them into the home as they are treated with Formaldehyde ….new furniture that has been treated with stain resistance)
Furniture and Rug Shampoo
Hair Dye
Hair Spray
House Paint (actually ANY kind of paint or varnish)
Kerosene
Matches
Moth Balls
Nail Polish
Nail Polish Remover
Oil Paint
Over Cleaner
Paint Remover
Perfumes
Permanent Wave
Solution
Pesticides
Rug Deodorizers (like carpet fresh)
Shoe Polish and Cleaners
Self Cleaning Ovens
Scented Candles
Spot Removers
Spray Starch
Suntan Lotions
Surgical Acrylics
Toilet Cleaners
TEFLON COOKWARE (Just throw it out ..Don’t take any chances by leaving even one pan in your house to be used by accident!)
Wax

Another thing to be aware of are toxic plants in your home. There are some safe birdie plants, for a partial list go to this link. cockatielcottage

NOOOOOOO NOT PAINT REMOVER!!!!

*Cries as that means she can't dip her Dungeon and Dragon minatures to redo their paint jobs periodically as characters change* ;_; Even if you're using a half shot glasses worth and you're doing it on the other side of the room with ventilation? I don't want to wait until 10PM at night to go outside because it's 100 + humidity to fix paint jobs....

BTW even after you've painted your nails I wouldn't handle the birds, what if they nibble/clean your nails and swallow a paint chip from em?

If you are more comfortable with that safety margin, that is great. On the flip side, there are not that many volatiles in a bottle of nail polish. I don't think it is an unreasonable risk, and do my nails in the living room (a fairly large room) where my fids live. I don't think I would put on acrylics or gels, but don't think a quick manicure is too dangerous in a well ventilated room.

Just my two cents......

Being a manicurist, I can safely say, no nail stuff at all around your birds.
I get warnings from the surgeon general all the time. Anyone who gets acrylics/gel/tips should NOT be around your birds after having your nails done. The dust you see coming off them as they file, contains SILICA and it is known to cause Fungal Granuloma and Aspergillosis in birds. The fumes from Acrylics are known to cause spontaneous miscarriages in women and brain tumors in manicurists.
The dusts cause COPD.

Whoa! I knew that acrylic stuff had to be bad, but I didn't realize how bad! I had that on my nails for YEARS! As soon as I got fids, I quit getting mine done. It was more because of the time and money that could be spent on birds than for the health reasons. Now I KNOW I won't go back!

alright - for the first time it seems to be a good thing that i can't wear nail polish (work with too much organic solvents... i'd have crap all over my samples).

however, when i do my toe nails i always go to a seperate room and keep the windows open (and valo out of it )
simply not worth the risk.....

thanks lisa for the details!

your welcome guys.
Always better safe then sorry.

In all reality, when you go to get yoru nails done, alot of places tell you, you need a new set every few weeks. I can tell you from 19 years in the business...if done properly....YOU DO NOT!
The reason you are "told" you need a new set, is because they are able to charge lower prices for maint on them, mass people in and out...however...all the masses are told they need new sets, that then run you more each couple times. the prices between the lower maint, and the new set, averages what you might pay at a regular salon in the same time frame.

Pregnant women should NEVER have acrylics and or even use glues while getting their nails done. Everything you put on your nails is absorbed into your bloodstream through your nail bed.

I have REFUSED pregnant clients, and have had the same clients for 19 years. The one and only reason I am NOT doing them now, is because I had to leave my shop behind when I moved with the army for the first time 3 years ago. It was never the same, trying to build up a clientel again.
I found out that I was actually into the business for my clientel and NOT for the money, and didnt enjoy it once the move.

There is a product named NAIL TEK. While I have not seen alot of positive results from all the nail growing wonders out there, I have witnessed NAIL TEK, and knock off of NAILTIQUES, work well if you follow the directions each day.

With that said, I have had nails continously since 1986 and only had new set done( I do my own) After taking them off when I was pregnant. I have only had ONE fungus. and that was from a bird bite that broke my nail under the cuticle, and when it grew in, it was green.

I have just been diagnosed with COPD from the silica I have inhaled through the years. They say the silica is just as bad as the dust that coal miners inhale and then develop black lung syndrome.
