Don't know how to cope

It has been a week since my bird died suddenly. Rushed to emegency vet when it was clear something was very wrong but he could not save him. It turned out he had an unusual yeast bacteria which he masked very well. Ate like crazy despite being sick, which is one of the symptoms apparently. Was not gaining weight which I was too much of a novice to realize. Only had him a couple of months but loved him so, so dearly. Consumed by "if only"'s which I can not get around. (should have realized, should have had him checked out when I brought him home, etc...) No one but bird people could understand the loss and the guilt. Most of my family and friends, although trying to be sympathetic, think I should be moving on already. My G-d, it has only been a week. I miss him so much. Just thought someone out there may have gone through something like this. Thanks for listening.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. You're right...take more time. There are many here who have lost fids and will be an awesome encouragement and support for you. Remember that your family loves you and is trying to help in the best way they know how. Many people don't view a human-animal bond to be as strong as human-human bonds while many of us know the bird-human bond to be incredibly strong. I can live for a few weeks without talking to my mom, but it's hard to go a day or two without Cayman. Take your time. Mourn your lost baby and then decide what to do from there.
In my thoughts and prayers,
Sonya

This is the perfect place to come for understanding. I would be devastated if my baby died. Of course, with every loss, there's a mourning period. It's easy to say, "Get over it," when it's not your loved one. I'm very sorry for your pain. Sending you lots of hugs and kisses.

I bought a sick canary a few years ago. I took her to two different vets, but she ended up dying anyway. I even surprised myself how sad and upset I was when she died. I would go shopping and get embarrassed when I would just start crying all of a sudden. I only had her a few months too. They really get under your skin and in your heart. So sorry for your loss.

I really appreciate your reply. Your story helps because it is so similar. I keep telling myself if only I had gotten him to the Vet sooner( I did not know he was sick because he kept eating), but who knows if he could have saved him. Anyway, very grateful for your words.

I'm very sorry... it's always so difficult to lose a pet. Take heart in knowing that you did all that you could do.

I'm a hard nosed right wing father of 3 teenagers , yet

My birds melt me ...........

I worry about them constantly , more so then when the wife and I started having kids at 21 .

I find my self concerned about the eggs the babies will we make good parents arewe doing the right things ,,, yet

When we started our human family the only thing I was concerned with was paying the bills and spending enough time raising my children.

Today I have 2 young Adults making their way thru College easly , and my baby a 16 year Joinor who 6'1" 210 lbs 2 way starter on the Varsity Football team .

Oh by the way they all live at home go to school and work almost full time ..

I guess I didn't do that bad ....

yet I worrie to death over my birds ...
