I figured I could get my big bird fix and learn a lot more about all birds at the same time. It seems like such a long time (yes, I think 2 weeks is a long time) but I'm really looking forward to it though.

Oh, congratulations!!! You'll love (and hate) bird rescue. On one side, you will see the very worst of what people will do to their animals. And on the other, you'll be able to give those poor guys a better life! I think it'll be a passion you won't be able to get rid of!!

Thank you, by the way!

Yeah, my main problem is going to be the fact that I know I'm going to want to bring them all home! I always have a tendency to go for the abused, neglected, unwanted animals that have behavioral issues. I've been that way since I was a kid (my mom LOVED that...lol). Most of my dogs, cats, and my horse were all "rescues" in a way mainly because of behavioral problems. I can't wait!

Also rescued horses. There is something SO rewarding about breaking through such an intelligent animal's defenses. The rescue I worked with gave me one of the horses (we had other horses) because I was the only person the horse would let touch. And I was only 12!! (was actually helping my mother volunteer) She died when I was 20 at the wonderful age of 30. And those 8 years were WONDERFUL.

You sound like good people. You're going on my list of people I want to be like.

*blushing* That's funny, my first horse was one that was being borded at a farm my mom worked at when I was 12. She was skinny, completely neglected, her owners didn't come and see her one time while she was there and she was a nervous wreck. She would freak out everytime they tried to take her out of her stall to bring her out and was impossible to catch. When she was in her stall all she did was pace and chew. Every time I went there I worked with her. My mom freaked! It got to the point where I was the only one who could do anything with her without her freaking out. My mom finally talked to the owners and they sold her to us (after me talking my mom into it). She was the greatest little horse for me. She eventually got to the point where other people could do things with her as long as I was around but if I wasn't there she went back to being a nervous wreck. I miss her so much.

You are right, there is something about finally breaking through and getting an animal to trust you when you know they have no reason to and you can't blame them for not. Years ago my mom asked me why I always want the "damaged" animals when there are so many sweet ones out there....I told her because they are the ones that need me the most (I was 8). Just like I think every child and person should know what it feels like to be truely loved, all animals should have the same. I just wish more people felt that way...that is why I am so looking forward to this volunteering. That and I know I will learn a lot and I also hope I can do some good as well.

WOW! That's so great! I wish they had parrot rescues around here- I've never heard of one. They aren't so common in Australia cause big exotic parrots are so very expensive. I'm still looking for a rescue though. What great exeriences you will have there!
It's so sweet of you to go for the neglected animals. There needs to be more like you.
Take care!
