Which bird?
Hello all.
I am new to this forum. I have been wanting to own a parrot for a long time, and finally decided to get one, but I am having hard time deciding which bird to get. I live in an apt, so too much noise can be a problem. I don't have any other pet. I live by myself, so one-person bird is fine with me. I am a student, so I can come back home no later than 5pm (sometimes 2,3pm). I'd like to have a cuddly bird, if it is possible. I have some experience owning birds(chickens, ducks, finches, budgies etc) So which bird should I get? There are too much options and I am so confused...any input will be appreciated. Thanks for reading |

Welcome to the forum! I would hate to say this, but lovebirds are not the answer to your question because they do make noises and can be shrill. One never knows when they will decide to chirp or scream. If I was in your shoes, I would look for a very quiet bird!

Pionus are quiet and they're bigger than a cockatiel. Tiels are good for conditions you mentioned.
In general, the bigger they are the louder they are. Beyond that, I'm not sure which birds are quiet. Stay away from conures and my Indian Ringneck was rather loud. Good luck! I hope others have more suggestions, but my knowledge on volume is rather limited. |

i was reading about senegals the other day and it says they are great apartment birds because they are fairly quiet. maybe that is an option. you also need to consider how much you are willing to spend or how much you can afford...

I would look at a Meyers, Senegal, Green Cheek Conure, Maroon Bellied Conure, Pionus, possibly a Quaker.
You also want to think about your living conditions next year, 5 years, 10 years. You say a one person bird is fine for you but what about when you have someone living with you?

Have a look at quakers, small poicephalus, cockatiels, parrotlets, rosellas, grass parakeets and pionus. They are listed as among the quietest in my bird book. That doesn't mean they are particularly quiet- just that they are not the loudest! Grass parakeets and pionus sound good for your situation. Are you planning on getting one or a pair? I go to school too, and my lorikeet is left alone for 7 hours a day and she does fine with that. She actually learnt to mimmick the cockatiels and budgie from the other side of the house! She's ecstatic when I come home though! Good luck on making the right choice and welcome to birdboard!!!

Yah hw about a senegal or meyers? They are quiter birds. But mabye you wanted a real parrot? Like a big talker etc etc. Eclectus are the most known for appts. They tend to be quieter but they need a special diet and they will be cuddly when you get home...
