window ac

I have 2 dusky conures. their cage is in my room rightabout 3 feet away from the window a/c. it can get really hot in my room so i turn the ac on low and put the blades so it blows away from them. they really dont get a breeze from it. but i am wondering if this would bother them in any way?

ive gone through the other posts about temperatures but nothing really letting me know about this particular situation.

I personally would move them as far away from it as possible. Three feet isn't enough in my experienced opinion.

okay(this is the person who was posting on vincents account, shes a friend of mine, just made an account of my own)

i will see about moving their cage to the opposite side of the room, thats about 12 feet away from it. and moving my rat cage over there if it will fit. really dont have any other options ;/ they dont seem to be bothered by it much, they still fly to me and to their cage, and all over. but i will see if i can find a better spot for them in the room. and the ac is only on for 5 minutes at the most...its a really small room that i live in and it cools off really fast.

i do have a dresser that is almost as tall as the bird cage...what if i moved that to the other side of the bird cage to block some of the cold air?

i also have not had a bird during winter yet. and im sure i can probably go use the search to find my answer, but since we are already on the subject.

are space heaters fine for them as long as i am in the room. i do not have any other source of heat except a space heater. im assuming i should keep that as far as possible away from their cage as i can too. and any suggestions on keeping the room warm for them while i am at work in the winter?

Thats sounds good. Drafts are not good as you know and the moving cold air can create drafts even without it blowing towards them so what you also want to be sure of is if you put the cage against a wall is there a draft from it following the wall? Feel or best yet ...while the air conditioner is on...puff some baby powder in the area where the cage will be and see how it moves. Cold air drops and hot air rises so you should direct the cold air up to cool the room faster but down to avoid cold drafts. Sounds funny but its true. If you point it up it will shoot up and drop quickly around the outside of the room (good for human, bad for birdie on the wall, lol) unless you keep a "top" on the cage like a towel or something. If you point it at the floor it will stay down and cool the room slower but creat less breeze. Make sense?

It doesn't affect most people, so this goes unchecked. And not to alarm, but, one of the unseen dangers of an air conditioner, not just around birds is, how clean do you think that the air actually coming out of that unit is? If you've ever opened one up to properly clean it, you'd realize the answer is "Not Very". Even with a filter system to trap most of the larger inbound particles, lots of dust, dander, and other particles, including bacteria, still get into, and collect in the unit. You mix that with the condensed moisture from the cooling coils, which then can form into mold. This whitches brew is then recycled, back into the rooms air supply. If you ask me the filtration system, is on the wrong side of the box, and, is no where near strong enough. Nobody wants to pull and clean a unit, with a fungicide and germicide sprays, at between 3 to 6 month intervals, so at least there's Lysol spray. Your doing it the right way in general, cool the room, not the birds. But, a regular oscillating fan also works to knock down the heat, and, it's much cheaper to operate.

i was considering going out and getting a fan, at least until the reaaaaally hot days of summer hit, then i think the birds and i bother will be thankful for the ac. it just started getting hot enough in here for the ac(a fan would work right now, but need to get one). so i cleaned out front of the ac before i used it for the birds sake...and wow was it ever dusty!! but i used q tips and swiffer pads to try and get all the dust out. thx for the info... time to go and organize the room now, lol...i have a feeling this is going to take all day to organize a room thats about 13x8 lol.
