canary laid shell less egg
My canary laid three eggs for three consectutives days, but this morning no egg as I would expect. This evening I found a shell less egg beside her food dish. If it had been there this morning I would have seen it. I wonder if it was a developing egg for tomarrow, just expelled before the shell was deposited on it? It was cold but I put in into the nest with the rest anyway, just to see what happens. It had a black dot inside. Do you think it will hatch?

I think it might be due to a lack of calcium to produce the shell. We had ducks and one laid a shell less egg once. Im not sure if it will hatch cos it doesnt have the protective covering so the temperature cant be controlled properly and any knock may damage the inside. I could be wrong though.

Nah it won't hatch- even if it was still alive now, as it developed, it would be too exposed to temperature, the bumping of the mother and siblings and harmful organisms. You might need to supplement the mothers diet with some calcium powder, or a special avian calcium product. Have you tried giving her scrambled eggs, egg and biscuits, cuttlefish bone etc? Sorry I don't know much about breeding!

I've raised poultry and waterfowl for several years, everything for Peafowl to Call Ducks and I have seen these eggs for year. Finally, I asked a poultry specialist about the no-shell eggs, the answer makes since to me. It takes 2 or more hours for a hen to lay her egg, if she is disturbed during the process she will sometimes expel the egg before the shell has has been deposited. Seems like the younger less patient girls do this more often than the older hens but any hen will drop the egg early if disturbed. I don't have experience with canary hens but thought this might ease your concerns. It's not serious like egg binding, which I understand is a life threatening issue related to calcium deficiency.

It also may be a lack of protein. Birds are unable to store protein, especially when the females are carrying eggs, just like our bodies (humans) are unable to store vitamin C.
Give her some foods with protein. The "pregnancy" really takes it out of them. Give her some scrambled eggs with the shells in it and see what else maybe an avian vet suggests.
