Covering birds at night - Why?
Why do people cover their birds up at night? Am I missing something by not doing this?
I've got a YS GCConure and I put him to bed in his cage in a dark room at night and then it's lit by the sun in the morning. He seems to get enough sleep and naps in my shirt in the evening. |

I cover mine because the lights are on in the room after they go to bed. My Alexandrine will sleep anywhere between 6:30 and 7 in the morning covered but my Green cheek is usually awake at 6ish or whenever she hears the lorikeets outside. Thats the only way they will have enough darkness but you dont have to cover them.

I cover mine for the most part so if any lights are turned on in the rooms around his cage in the night it wont disturb his sleep as much. Also I believe it can be a comfort thing and make them feel more secure.
When I do my night shifts I leave while it is still daylight out so he doesnt get covered sometimes, he seems the same the next day regardless if he was covered or not. |

I have two tiels, Ash has his cage in the corner of my room and Kiwi has his cage down stairs in the living room since my room isn't big enough for two big cages of their size.
I cover mine up so they have enough darkness to sleep, but I always leave portion uncovered so if they have a night fright they can see where they are. I always leave a dimmed light on for Kiwi and a small night light on it my room at night for Ash.. I've read that covering your bird is for security reasons for them I think. Some people cover them up and some don't.
