Is it common for my guy to be so vocal when leaving the room? He was with his sister in the pet store so I am sure he is going through all sorts of stress, When I approach him I talk to him soflty and I am able to put my hand in the cage and he does not flinch, however he will not step into my hand yet. How long should I leave my hand in the cage?

If he is not afraid you can try putting your finger aginst his belly right above his feet. push against him and say "step up". If he doesnt but doesnt run then push until he is forced to step or fells like he might fall (he wont) but say step up everytime so he learns it. Mine are all taught step up before they leave. He calls for you when you leave the room, thats good, develope a call back: a whistle or better yet just some words like "I'm here". it will become your "contact call". After all YOU are his flock now. Are his wings clipped? if they are not he will fly when you get him out so make sure you are in a small room like the bath with the lid down. I prefer clipped as p'lets can still fly clipped properly but not as wild and crazy.

When teaching to step up, I've heard it's better not to force them by pressing on their bellies. You should teach him first to eat out of your hand (millet spray or a favorite seed?) and when he reaches for it, let him step onto you so he can get to it. Instead of learning that when he feels a pressure on his tummy he has to step up or be uncomfortable, he'll learn that he should step up in order to get to his treat :D Or you could do a mixture of both! That's what I do. Positive reinforcement :D Welcome and congrats on your new baby!
