You might look into the Avian Welfare Society. I know you are looking for non-profits on this board, and though I am not one I know of a few in IL. I have been volunteering at two for several weeks now, only once per week. You might check out:
Ollie's Parrots Perch Bird Boarding and Avian Behaviorist
a Refuge for Saving the Wildlife Inc.

It's really quite amazing working with rescued birds. I say amazing in an effort to describe a mix of emotions associated with the circumstances: dozens of birds (especially toos), many of them pluckers, some mutilators, many peculiarities (don't like men, don't like women, hard to get back in cage, bit of a jekyll and hyde, one minute a punctured ear, the next the bird likes you, etc.), tons of cleaning hardly enough time for socializing, some places have many volunteers, others a few and so on and so on. I often wonder about how behavioral modification works and how efffective it is in the case of larger rescues...?

So what do you rescue? How many birds do you have? What are your goals?

any and all, some are handicapped, blind, missing toes, etc, currently have 44,have had as many as 56, my goal is to keep people informed of how and what it means to care for birds, attempt to reduce the # that are sold, let go,and abused Most of the time when I talk to people about birds there are many who come up and say"I didn't know that about birds?" education is key I think,I have offered to foster birds for people who really love them but are having surgery,or some other crisis. Some will remain with me for life, some will be given to the "better" home,EX: I had a parrotlet who needed love and companionship, she had been throw against a wall by her female owner so she could never trust me she tried but was too terrified, the women who adopted her had lung cancer and a deep voice they bonded almost instantly and are both happier,so although I could provide a good home,it wasn't the BEST for her,the pictures of her with her new Mom are truly wonderful I swear that bird smiles now

Hi I am new here and have not posted yet.

I ran a non profit for 10 years and just closed down April 1st. The first thing you need to do is incorporate in your state. Then contact the IRS, they will send you the paper work. It isn't too hard to do, just a lot of paper work.

Sorry, I probably should mention that I am a member of the Avian Welfare Coalition and was TAOS accredited. The Avian Welfare Coalition has on their website a mentorship program for anyone that has questions and would like help getting started.

May I inquire as to why you shut down?

Thanks.

You first need to read over the IRS pages on "nonprofits". (search on the Internet) Be prepared to get into a LOT of paperwork tracking. Lots of rules you have to follow. The IRS will have your number too!
