Dream Job

Humphrey and I are watching a re-run of the John Walsh show. Well, I'm watching; he's eating an apple slice on the sofa next to me. Today's show is about women who have their own "dream jobs". One was a handbag designer, another owned her own chocolate shop, etc. They asked the whole audience "what is your dream job?" and every once in a while they would show an audience member and on the screen it would show how they answered the question - like "Heather's dream job is to design sets for movies" or something like that. I was thinking about how I would answer that question. No question about it, if I was in that audience, it would say, "Michele's dream job is to own her own parrot rescue".

Now, my dream job sounds a lot more possible then say, being movie star or something like that. But I just can't see how I could ever do that without winning the lottery first. There seems to be no way to have a parrot rescue and earn a living, too.

Just having some thoughts, that's all. Anyone have any thoughts about this?

Michele and Humph
PS - Visiting New Life Parrot Rescue for the day in February and I can't wait!

If we all waited to win the lottery, then nothing would ever get done! Here are my thoughts - keep moving forward, take baby steps and you will get there someday. Why can't you start small? Start looking into how to get not-for-profit status, start talking to people who run rescues about how they got started, start looking for donors, anything to take steps toward the dream, right?

Well, before I discovered birds and became my own personal rescue (LOL) I always wanted to run a Bed and Breakfast. Something that would accomodate maybe 4 couples. However, now that I'm cooking and cleaning round the clock, the whole glamour side of that has flown out the window. I did have my own upholstery business for about 10 years and that was exciting, fast paced, interesting and fun. I like to work with my hands and to create. I'm too old for the big heavy stuff, so I suppose I'm already doing what I like best.

I'm with you Nancy. I've always thought it would be nice to own and run my own bed and breakfast. Thought of buying a big old run down house in maine and having it family operated.
My husband and I just got done remodeling our house, totally renovated. It took us a year and a half. Ok, I'm done. The bed and breakfast was a nice thought. Besides, I don't think our guest would enjoy being woke up every morning to my screaming, hungry U2!
I've been thinking lately about how I've missed my boat on becoming an FBI agent. This I would truely love to do. Still a possibility but I wonder how I can be under cover with a screaming, hungry U2 on my shoulder!

Yep for me it would be working as a photographer for National Geographic
or even freelance if I was good enough.

I am going to frame and try to Ebay some of my better wild bird pics and see how they do.

I am in college right now, majoring in animal science and pre-vet. I always wanted to be a vet, and I think it would be great to be an exotic animal vet, maybe for a zoo or wildlife preserve or something like that. Of course, I also like the idea of working for animals in need, like at a shelter (I work at one now). I would like to live somewhere with lots of space someday and be a rescue, although it will probably be for dogs or cats. I foster animals now, so it is somewhat similar.

Hey, let's get almost completely off-topic! I don't know how well this would fit into the "job" part of dream job, but I'd like to build, maintain, and own a functional replica of a medieval European village. Once in working order, it would be used for fairs, live-action roleplaying (LARP) events, field trips for local schools and youth groups, etc. In it one could learn everything from how miserable the average person's life was to what the nobles did for fun. I'm not talking about some idealized Medieval Times experience, folks.

While visiting, one could learn the ins and outs of farming, smithing, medieval beliefs and superstitions, as well as more "noble" and "manly" activities like archery, swordplay, and falconry. Certain health and safety matters would obviously be modernized, and any food would undoubtedly appeal to our modern sensibilities. I'll stop now, lest I get excited enough to insert some archaic speech.

...And all this coming from an unemployed 24-year old college dropout with neither the location nor the capital to realize such a dream. So instead of saving parrots, people, or cute little animals, I want to save a way of life that died out about 800 years ago. Yippee!
