Bird's and Stuffed Animals?

I've been seeing everywhere people putting stuffed animals inside the cages with their birds. I have a couple of questions about this:

Is it safe to put stuffed animals with your birds? I mean won't they chew them up and possible injest the the stuffing?

If it is safe, or there are safe "atlernatives" what are they. I have an Umbrella cockatoo that loves to chew and am debating the stuffed animal thing to give her something to occupy and satisfy her chewing behavior?

Thanks for any of your help and advice.

I definitely don't think it would be safe to leave it in there all the time unless it was all cotton (fabric, thread, and stuffing). I guess I don't have to deal with this problem since Darwin madly attacks all stuffed animals with vengeance.

I use stuffed animals for my macaw and have never had a problem.

I just make sure they have no removeable pieces like buttons or beads, etc (anything they can "pick" off). You can make a small incision and remove the stuffing. Newt absolutely loves his stuffed octopus. You can see its legs hanging in the picture here. Newt sleeps with it.

i only use stuffed animals for my babies who are too young to chew on them, but they like to cuddle up to them sometimes.

This is Bruce....he hangs out with Pita on his upstairs playstand. If you squeeze his tummy he sings a little song, and Pita sings and dances with him.

Ash has many rainbow lorikeet toys she loves to wrestle with- I have a picture where they are all in a row on their backs, pic taken from above, and you wouldn't tell one was real unless you looked really closely. She only plays with them under supervision though- i don't want her to break them, or injest anything.
