Talking A Fid By Any Other Name...

I was thinking about my fids' name... I adore it, some people seem to like it, some people cannot pronounce it and some people think it's overdone. It's a pretty name and I think it suits him. I call him Luen for short, my bf calls him Arrow. When he's being silly, I call him a Silly Pink Chicken I'm pretty sure he thinks thats' his name...
What names, nicknames and affectionate terms do you guys have for your fids? How did you come up with the name you settled on? Has your fids' personality changed so dramatically since you met them, that you sometimes think you should have named them something else? (King Poopshooter comes to mind...)
I'm just curious. To me, coming up with the name for a pet is one of the most fun parts!
When I was waiting to get a galah, I came up with a list of potential names... Some of them probably suit Luen better than 'Araluen', but he seemed like an Araluen when I met him. For example, now he's become more clowny and affectionate, my original name (Lychee) may suit him more. But he'll stay Luen
SUDDEN AND ABRUPT END OF POST.

Chico got his name because I kept calling him "little boy", and since I live in So. Fla. and we have a large latin population here, I gave him a Spanish name...Chico means little boy.
Then I found out she was a girl.

When I got Rico I just wanted something that went well with Chico.

Now that I've had them both for a while, I would have done better naming Chico "Howard the Coward", and Rico would be "Curious George".

Sunny, my cockatiel, was originally going to be Pikachu, but my mother said no to that. So we settled for Sunny because his cheeks. Sun, Sunster, Sunmeister, Sun-man, and Sunflower all come up sometimes. We call him James Brown now and then because he loves nothing more than to dance around when there's music playing; it's the cutest thing ever.

Precious, my lutino peachfaced lovie, got her name because she was just that when we got her. She's got quite the 'tude, but that doesn't stop her from being really adorable. We also call her Shredder because of her amazing ability to reduce a letter-size sheet of paper to strips in about an hour. She's very talented at it.

I love the name Araluen.
My keets Marley and Sabrina got their names from Bob Marley and I just liked the name Sabrina. Zeke's name was Summit Spike when I got him (no clue how they came up with that one) and everyone thought I was crazy for naming him Zeke but I kept trying out different names and kept coming back to Zeke. I call him Boo Boo most of the time. That and Zekie. It's funny cuz if anyone else calls him Boo Boo, he get soooo mad! Sophie is a total sweetheart and seeing as she came with the name Q (yes, that is it). She needed a sweet name and it fits her perfectly. I call her Sophie Monster when she's being a brat. Chloe just looked like a Chloe to me. She's kinda small, petite looking and cute. Moe just seemed like a Moe. Dino is getting a new name but I got sick of calling him "Baby 1". I call him Stinkybutt or Stinky most of the time. Ellie's name has changed twice but now it really seems to fit her and Bugsy came from him being such a cuddler when he was a baby. I kept calling him cuddle bug but that was to weird. Now it's kind of changed to being named after the gangster Bugsy Segal. He is still cuddly but he thinks he rules the roost around here! Don't feel bad, no one likes any of my birds names....but I wouldn't change any of them.

We have lots of nicknames for Darwin, but most of the time it is "little D", "D", and "monkey bird". We also call him SR318 (his id number), chicken, monkey, baby bird, and about a thousand more.

I also think that naming a fid is one of the most fun parts- plus a name stays with them for a long time (usually) and shouldn't be taken lightly, in my opinion! It also paves the way to how we, and other people, view that animal. For instance, you are more likely to want to pat a dog called Baby, than one called Shredder!
I love choosing names that sound good, suit the pet and are meaningful. 20000-names. com is a good site! I love the name Araluen! I hope I pronounce it correctly!?

I spent a month or two naming Ash, because it needed to be an appropriate name that I would never get sick of- cause I knew she'll be with me for decades. Out of the list (including Beetle, Lucian, Raven, Phoenix etc) I picked the name Ashling because it meant dream- vision. Ash was just that! Also Ashling could mean baby Phoenix because they rise from the ashes. Her nick names are Ash, Ashy, Asher, Bubby, Birdie, Baby girl, Fluffy.

I named my tiel Peanut when I was ten... I named him that simply because he's the same colour as peanuts! His nick names are Pea, Nutsy and Pretty boy. I suddenly came up with the name Indiana for my lutino as soon as I saw her, and that stuck for some reason. I usually call her Indi.

I called my collie/ heeler dog Flea because it's ironic that a dog be called by the parasite which infects him sometimes, and also because he had fleas from when he was a day old! Plus, he had brown speckles up his legs, and grey flecks all over his body. His nick names are Flea-bus, Flea-Flea, Fatty, Bubby, Phillipe, Puppa boy, Son-of-Arkey (sunovarki) and Big Boy (he's the biggest of our four dogs- including his dad- at 33 kilos).

I called my husky pup Ichabod after the legend of sleepy hollow, and the movie with Jhonny Depp in it! I also traced the meaning; 'tracker,' which suits him perfectly, since he's a dog. His nick names are many! I call him Iggy, Icky, Iggy pop, Icka, Puppy, Bubby, Fatty, Husky and Wolf Pup. ps. None of my dogs are fat, I just call them that... it seems to boost their moral :P

I made up the name Medlock for my rooster, I don't know where on earth I got that from! His children are called Willow, Hemlock, Cocklebur and Belladonna which are all herbs or plants. Belladonna's nick name is Penguin because when she first hatched, she was black with a white chin ^__^

Oh, and my little sister named the budgie Silk... I had previously been calling her Lemony Snicket for some strange reason.

Well that's my gang's names! :D

Chico's Mom-
Haha, Chico's name and origins are cute! I guess Chica would be for a girl? ... I keep thinking of Chiko Rolls with feathers, but that's still an amusing mental image for me heehee. Funny how the mind wanders Do you find that your fids have trouble differentiating between the two names due to similarity?

WhoDoVooDoo-
Haha... aaw, why veto Pikachu? My bf and I are making a comic about birds and naming the 'tiel 'Peeka' for the same reason... The slight change is to avoid copyright problems XD But they really do look like little Pikachu birds! Does Sunny like James Brown in particular when it comes to dancing?

KDK241-
Firstly, thank you ^^
Marley's a cute name for a 'keet - sounds like a name my cousin would give a budgie. And do you get many people asking if Sabrina's named after the teenaged witch? Zeke's a nice name, and I don't think it's a strange name for a tiel. I mean, plenty of people name their pets human names! And I think Zeke's a sorta 'edgy' teen guy name (just an opinion) with works well with the feather mohawk Sophie's an adorable name and she looks sorta sleepy-cute in the picture - what mutation is that? Pied..? Looking at your signature alone though I agree, Chloe and Moe DO suit their names strangely enough, and I cannot figure out how.
I don't see a problem with those names... Though I am now seriously curious about 'Summit Spike'

DarwinTheSun-
I'm going to take a stab-in-the-dark here and guess Darwin likes the climb a lot? Did you name him after Charles Darwin? Sorta goes with the monkey theme :}

Ashling-
Hmn. Not sure if you pronounce it right. I guess if I had to type the pronunciation I'd type Arra-loo-wen, but it's said quickly.
I didn't know an Ashling was a young phoenix, though now you mention it, that does make sense... And it a cute way of naming her after the firebird without naming her Phoenix. Sounds enough like a name (Ashley) that it's not too weird to call out when you want her to fly to you. Unlike my poor cat a few years back, 'Doom'. The neighbours were so weirded out when I called her in for tea
Peanut is an adorable name for a bird, of any shape :} Does he like peanuts, by the way? And Indi makes a very cool girls' name.
Flea is awesome - admittedly, I think it's my fave of your pet names
Ichabod's a nice name - but my birth name is Igraine and I keep flinching at the nicknames Iggy and Iggy-Pop lol Not that they're necessarily bad nicknames, I just never wanted to be called them, so naturally those were the nicknames my friends stuck to when I was young. Have a lot less trouble with it now I've shortened my name to Rain And I own the movie Sleepy Hollow... might watch it again tonight!
I love your chickens' names - I know they're herbs but they all sound so magical and mysterious, like witch/wizard names! Sounds like you might expect to find them all around a cauldron with pointy hats one dark and stormy night
Silk's a pretty name, and now I think about it, feathers do have a very silky texture, so that fits quite nicely.

Eep. Loooong post. But I felt the need to reply to each XD Sorry if I missed a few fids.

They aren't confused, since they must think their names are ChicoRico or RicoChico, since I can't keep them straight! I call them by each others' names, so I figure as long as the vet knows which bird is which, that's all that matters lol. When I am talking to Rico I say his name a lot, same with Chico, so maybe they'll catch on, or maybe I'll catch on haha!!

I was 3 when I named my cockatiel Daisy, dont know ehy and dont remember doing it lol. I think they just asked me what "her" name is and I said Daisy...meanwhile Daisy is a boy lol.

I learnt from Daisy and decided on unisex names then lol. For my alexandrine I named her Matches. One of my favourite bands is called "the matches" and I really liked the name matches for a bird. plus the reddish stripe up the side looks a bit like a match strike and she turns everything into little matches. nicknames: matchie, matchie girl, matchie baby, match, and others like, matches the brat and so on lol.

Then there's Beetle. Well, I am a fan of Kombi's (the VW) and I plan on naming my Eclectus Kombi, Beetle got her name from the VW Beetle cos she's a mini and she's cute, plus its a cute name. nicknames: Beet, Bertie beetle, snuggle bug, beet beet.
