My aunt and uncle have chickens. I used to go over there when I was a kid and have a blast with them. They gave me a couple of chicks once but we had a puppy at the time and he got them. :( I would have chickens now if I could, I love chickens!

I have 6 chickens! I think they should have a category too! Pigeons and doves have a category- maybe chickens should go in there? They are great little pets! My rooster Medlock is my favorite- I used to take him for walks in a harness and sit in the forset in the park with him. He'd fall asleep as I pushed him in a baby swing. Definately as fun as any bird- probably not as intelligent, or needy- but lots of fun. My rooster and chicken laid eggs and had 9 babies... then we got Huskies and they killed the mama chicken and three babies. Medlock was depressed at the loss of his wife, but a bit of incest fixed him right up :o Now his daughter is sitting on his eggs. D'oh!
Ashling loves to chase the chickens around! And boy do they run!

You can't say two different species are the same- quails are as much like chickens as a budgie is alike to an amazon! Chickens are much bigger, usually more relaxed and the dads aren't as prone to killing their babies. Quails are smaller, flighty and fast! The dad will often kill the babies. I used to have button quail- they are super cute. When you try to catch them, they shoot straight up into the air! Mine had babies, and in the second clutch, I incubated them in an incubator and when they hatched, they thought I was mum and folloed me around. Cutest ever!
I'll see if I can get a vid od Ash and the chickens soon- it's really funny to watch- the chickens are like ten times her size, but she hops/ runs after them anyway.

I have never had grown chickens, but a few years back I bought an incubator and hatched babies. I was trading this lady near me baby chicks for eggs, it worked out well, and I think within a few months I hatched something like 60 baby chicks. It was way cool! I always called in sick to work on the days they were hatching. haha

When my first batch of chickens hatched, I stayed up the whole night with them so that no mice would kill them. Needless to say, I had a looong sleep in and no school that day!

We have 15 chickens and I allow them to totally free range every day all day long. They get locked into their safe coop at night. So far haven't lost one though last year we did have a Goshawk that tried pretty hard to get one.

Our chickens are: One fancy crossbred rooster with a double comb, bright red eye, beige/white/black feathers and feathers on his feet (he is quite the handsome fella); two small bantam hens, black combs, mohawk hairdos, feathers on their feet, greyish black in color; and 12 Brown Leghorn laying hens. We usually get 10-12 eggs a day with at least one being from the Banty hens (a little bit bigger than a golf ball). The Leghorn eggs are so large that when you put them in the recycled egg container, it won't close!

I enjoy my chickens very much and they are quite tame. They come when they are called and follow us around the yard as if to say "whatcha DOING." They are cute!
