Nanday Conure - Yeast Infection

Hi. My Nanday Conure Was Diagnosed With A Yeast Infection Today. The Doctor Prescribed 3 Drops In Birds Mouth 2x A Day. My Problem Is My Conure Will Not Take The Drops. He Runs, He Hides, He Turns Up Side Down! You Name It, He Avoids It. I Put 3 Drops Onto A Food Pellet And Put It Into His Dish. He Eventually Ate The Food. Will The Medicine Still Work By Doing This? Also, Can Anyone Give Me Any Pointers On How Get My Bird To Take His Medicine From A Dropper? Or Any Thing Else? Any Tricks? Thanks.

contact your vet to see if the meds are mixable. meaning, you can mix it with say cranberry juice and feed it via syringe...
this should help if they are able to be mixed...some cant.

Put something yummy- 100% natural fruit juice, or even suger water- in the dropper and feed from this throughout the day when playing. He will learn that the dropper = yummy treat and when it comes time for medicine, he'll open wide! Afterwards, go back to the fruit juice again, so that his last memory of the dropper is a good one again. Hmmm... I'm gonna buy a dropper and start that soon! :D Oh btw- yeast infections are one of my feas with Ash- being on a high sugar, sloppy, wet, fruity diet that gets to "cook" in my bedroom while I'm at school for 7 hours. What's it like with a yeast infection, can you tell me?

This is definitely worth a call to your vet. I was under the impression that sugar is off limits with a yeast infection, because the yeast thrives with extra sugar. I thought that when a bird has a yeast infection all sugared foods (including all fruits) went off the diet until the yeast was under control.

I would say that your best option is to towel your bird and give him the drops that way. You might put something on the end of the syringe that he can chew while administering (maybe peanut butter?). But this is something you should chat with your vet about.

I adopted my eight year old conure from a mother and son that were never home. When I brought him home, I noticed his back was bald from feather picking. The previous owner had never taken Oscar to the vet. So, I took Oscar for his first vet visit. His droppings were tested and that is how I found out her had a yeast infection. Other than the picking, there were no other signs. Thanks for your help concerning the dropper. I will try it today.

hi barb. giving bread products to a bird, too often, will lead to, and/or complicate, an exsiting yeast prob. a little bread is ok, a couple times a week.
