birds and hardwood floor installation

We are having hardwood floors installed and I am wondering how long we should have our birds out of the house? When can we bring them back, to an area of the house isolated from the installation area? Thanks so much.

Is it a hardwood (real wood) floor that is nailed or glued down, or a floating floor? Each one has a different way of installing. If it's glued down, it would need the longest time for the glue to dissipate -- probably a week or more. If it's a floating floor (not attached to anything, just pushed down), it would be OK pretty quickly -- the same day after the workers are gone and the general dust is cleaned up. With a nailed-down, it would need the edge boards to be installed and the work finished completely. While the work is being done, it does create some dust and debris. All of this is a general guide, your floor should be detailed in here for us to know better. Of course, your fids would have to be away from the premises while this is going on. I put a laminate floor down, and did it myself, and it is the least problem for birds. I could leave them in the house, just keep them away from that room where the work was being done.

We are also considering new floors. I think we are leaning toward the laminate due to dogs & kids. Do you think the birds would be okay in the basement while the work is being done upstairs?

I would leave them out of the house completely until the fumes from the glue and finish is not noticeable anymore. I'd ask how long they take to fully cure and air out the house well. :)

If in doubt, move them out!! Better safe than sorry. I would hate the fumes or dust to be a problem for your birds..
