Question Vet Visits?

I've received some mixed advice on whether or not to bring a new bird to the vet? I assumed I would bring him to the vet after taking him home, but I was told by the breeder you only have to go if there is a problem? Any advice? Thanks!!

Stasia,
I believe that a bird needs a wellness exam when you get him or her, and yearly thereafter.

Personally, I would always take a new bird for an exam. Lots of times the breeder will only honor a health guarantee if you've had the bird vet checked, so I would ask your breeder what her policy is. If it's your first bird, it gives you a chance to get to know the vet without having an emergency situation. If there's nothing wrong with the bird, you still will have baseline weight, CBC, etc. for that particular bird. If it's your 3rd or 10th bird, it gives the vet a chance to get to know that particular bird when it's not an emergency situation.
Maybe you can also tell that I'm a firm believer in well birdy check-ups, too!

I agree with both of you; a vet visit is a MUST when you bring a new bird into your home. Of course I was new to birds when I brought my first one home and am still playing catch up on full wellness exams.
Also, my avian vet says that a full exam is required every 2 years, vice the one that I have been told. Of course it is a personal decision.
