Question Problem with diet?

Captain my cockatiel was fed an all seed diet at the petshop where I got him at. I know this is not healthy for him so I decided I would look around for a pellet diet and try to get him to convert. The problem is that the country I live in does NOT sell pellet diets! :aiwebs_01 The closest place I could get it from would be the UK and I would have to spend quite a bit in shipping prices. If this is my only option then I will do it. But, I was wondering if there is any way to give him a more healthy diet without the pellets? Can I make my own bird diet? So far, I have been trying to add veggies and some fruit to his seeds. He has taken a few bites of some things but for the most part he is not interested. I've tried making toys out of the food to make it more interesting but no luck. :eusa_wall What are my options? And advice is appreciated. Thanks!

About Pellets!

HI,Have you checked with any of your local Vets--here in the states alot of the vets sell pellets out of there offices(That is why they tend to make US feel like criminals if we dont have our birds an an all pellet diet)!!!!!! WELL I personally(and this is JMHO) do NOT feel that an all pellet diet is good enough for my Birds! First off--If you were to research and find out what your bird would eat in the wild---(where is HE/SHE gonna find Pellets) HUH! Seed/Grain/Fruit/veggies etc are all what they would eat in the wild, and I feel that as long as I'm giving my birds FRESH Fruits/VEGGIES/BEANS/RICE/NUTS etc etc etc and a good seed mix--which does have pellets in it then they are Happy and Healthy! I have been feeding my birds(some are 15 now) the same for all these years. It might take offering your tiel new foods over and over again(it took years to get My daughters Cag to eat good for him foods). But just keep offering a wee bit each and every day. Good Luck and remember--This is just My Opionion--there wil be others that believe in the pellets--I'm just not one of them! Bonnie

I have to agree with what has been said so far as well....

an all-pellet diet is NOT the best diet - for any bird.

But let me ask you something if I may...

When you say your bird came to you eating "an all seed diet",
what exactly do you mean by "seed diet?"

Do you mean the bird was fed nothing but sunflower seeds? (or any one single type of seed?)
OR, do you mean he eats a seed BLEND, that one can get at pet shops, Wal-mart, etc and contains several types of seeds as well as things like rolled oats, dried/diced carrots, fruits, raisins, cracked corn, nuts, beans, etc??

If you mean the latter (a seed blend) then that is not so horrible at all!
Just supplement that bowl full of 'seed' with small chunks of fresh fruits, veggies, and healthy snacks and treats -every day- and your bird should be fine. :icon_smil
