I had a Nanday named Pokey. He was very loving although very bossy & demanding...which of course could not have possibly been because he was our only fid & spoiled rotten LOL!!! He talked and when wanted something he wanted it now but as I said he was very spoiled! I loved Pokey very much although Nandays are not as colorfully appealing as the sun conure I can attest to the fact that they can be wonderfully loving and a terrific addition to any flock.

Conures, tho beautiful, are not my favorite birds. They scream loudly and shrilly to get your attention, and that might JUST grate on your nerves.. I've never had a good experience with ANY of the conure species, but that's just me.
Think of a blue jay when he's ticked off at the local cat..and multiply the noise by 2..and it can go on for quite some time. It was the call of the conure that turned me off..unless it was a Patagonian..but never got one of those either!!! Suns, Jendays, Nandays..they all sound about the same... |

I am a nanday lover through and through so I would tell you to go for the nanday. I have two nandays. Though both are sweet wonderful birds the one I got as a tame freindly baby is my heart and soul. His name is Zorro and he is a perfect companion all the way around.
Be sure you get a taste of a conure screaming though. As you see above they are not meant for everyone. Nandays are loud but sun conures are shrill so they can both grate on nerves of people who like quiet. I have six diffrent types of conures and hands down my nandays are the very best! I have owned a few different conure species. I definitely warn against a sun. I have never met a sun that does not have a shrill voice that grates on everyones nerves. But if you can handle it, go for it! They love the sound of their own voice. Cherry heads, I know you don't mention, but they are extremely loud too.
I've owned and had experice with several Green Cheeked conures, and they are by far, my favorite of the Conure family. Very smart, and while they can be loud, they tend to be a bit less hyper about it, and aren't all that shrill. Very managable noisewise, and a very fun bird. I have never owned a nanday, but I have known a few. They are wonderful creatures. Loud, but nowhere near as shrill as a sun. Happy researching! And congrats on deciding to add a member to your flock!

I made the decision and put a deposit down on the Nanday. The pet store owner, who hand fed him, will keep him until our birdroom in finshed. His name is Zorro :icon_smil

Looks like I'm too late for my opinion but like Lissa, I would not get either, too loud for me anymore. I would ask the shop if ya can transfer the deposit to a Meyers or a Senegal or Jardine or African Grey.....JMHO......

I would go with the cuddly Nanday as he sounds so sweet. I can't resist a cuddly bird!
But do try to check out the noise levels and make sure that it wouldn't cause a problem with your neighbors.
