I've spoken to two different people in my state who are affiliated with The Parrot Place (there are a few). Honestly? They are really nice people who only hand-raise a few species and the babies are extremely well-socialized, very healthy and very sweet. I did not opt to buy babies through these people but their affiliation with The Parrot Place had nothing to do with it.
I'm not saying that The Parrot Place is a venture that I would be intersted in -- I have no interest in breeding parrots nor do I have interesting in raising them for sale.

sad...very sad....
It is sad that you are against raising the standards for which parrots are raised and sold in this county, educating customers so they do not purchase a parrot impulsively, and offering FREE behavioral consultation for as long as they own their parrot to ensure that the parrot does not end up in rescue.

What gets me is that the post ended in June and got woken up today by a defender.
They may not be bad people but I do agree that pamphlet is certainly one of the things that cause people to buy a bird knowing nothing about them, thinking they will always be perfect, not messy, talk up a storm, love you and never bite you, and that they make us healthier by eliminating stress. While I admit that my birds do have the power to calm me, that's sure as heck not a reason to go out and buy one! I get agitated at them just as much as I get calmed by them so it's a moot point in my book. People need to be PROPERLY educated on birds, including all the not so nice aspects and that is what is going to help lower the number of rescues every year and certainly telling people that birds are perfect companions is totally contradicting what we really need to be telling them. If people thought about why they really want a parrot (like do they just want something to talk to them and look pretty for company or do they want what amounts to another child you are going to take care of for the rest of it's life that isn't ever going to grow up, leave home, and support you and are they ready to make a really long commitment because I see a lot of birds being rehomed because their owners are moving and can't take them which is really silly... or because they are too loud (which they should have known before buying the bird if the person they bought from was honest)... or because they get seed all over their perfect house (heaven forbid!)... or a million other reasons that are just plain rediculous and would not be an issue if they had been properly educated first! Sorry for the rant... but as a parront to eight birds that were no longer wanted by their former owner because of a move, attitude, because they didn't like everyone in the house, because they talked too much/too little, or whatever it may have been, I have feel I have the right to put my two cents in on this issue (and that two cents would have been better spent on my fids!) |
