Bird Safe Kitchen Appliances

Hi all,

We're about to become first time home buyers (yay!) and need to buy new appliances (for everything) in the kitchen. Does anyone have any info/advice on bird safe appliances or any actual bird friendly product suggestions? I can't think of how a fridge or microwave are going to do any harm, but I thought I'd ask just in case. I can't find it now, but I want to think I read a thread on here about new ovens in particular and how they can off-gas dangerous chemicals to birds during the first few uses?

Thanks in advance everyone!

The only dangers that I know of would be the cookware. Try to get some that isn't teflon. Also cleaning products for your kitchen...Most of them are toxic to birds. There are several places that you can find that will tell you bird safe alternatives.

I don't think I've heard anything about new ovens and dangerous chemicals, But I haven't had to replace an oven since Iv'e had the fids, so I never really researched that. Maybe someone else could chime in on that and maybe add more to your list.

I heard that the "self cleaning ovens" are not safe... that you need to move the fids to another room...something about the smell.

Actually, I may have found the answer to my own question!

Birds and Kitchen Safety

Apparently, just like cookware, you need to watch out for ovens with PTFE.

Quote:
A stove, heated the first few times, may emit fumes from components treated with chemicals intended to inhibit rust and deterioration. A self-cleaning oven may also give off toxic fumes, perhaps from parts treated with nonstick coatings. Emissions are often strongest when appliances and cookware are new. (This does not mean that older nonstick products are safe for use around birds.) When moving into a new home, run the stove/oven at a high heat level for several hours a few days prior to moving, before you and the birds are in residence. Open the windows for ventilation during this process. Use a range hood that vents to outdoors, as opposed to ventless hoods that blow pollutants back into the room . . .

. . . It’s difficult to say which stove would be safe, as models change frequently. When considering the purchase of a new stove or appliance, contact the manufacturer prior to buying. You’ll usually find an address or telephone number on the label or packaging. Ask if the products include polymers containing PTFE or other potentially harmful chemicals. If you are told they do not, insist on written assurance of that fact. Of course companies cannot guarantee that any product is absolutely safe for use around birds because most products are not routinely tested on birds, and manufacturers do not have control over how you use the product.
So I guess I'll be adding that to my list of things to do before we move in!

We're buying a house and getting married. . . our registry is all Stainless products with no coating, no teflon or calphalon or anything. All products are bird friendly.

I don't think we ever found a safe rice cooker, though.

If it's a new construction, watch new carpets and new flooring. If you can smell it, it's not safe for birdy yet. Airing out the house for several days will clear it up.

The Grey Roost
VOC's and what are they?

Frigidaire appliances makes a smoothtop stove that is NOT self cleaning.
It is the only model available. I researched and researched it while redoing our kitchen a few houses back. IT was a great stove.
I wouldnt hesitate to buy the same one again. I had the white.(339F)

Thanks a bunch Lisa! That list of chemicals will come in handy. Looks like I've found my stove now too.

Calphalon is a brand, not a material. They make cookware that is SST in addition to cookware coated with Teflon

We are about to buy a new stove... we were also looking at a GE that had the flat glass/porcelin cook top but it does not have a self cleaning feature. Have you ever had any problems with your glass top range and your birds... What things do i need to look for?

thanks

Throw all your pots out and go Stainless Steel. I did that and not looked back since. All my other pots and pans got rusty quickly if I burnt anything. Not with SS stuff, much easier to clean too.

Just need to find a smaller SS frying pan now for pancakes. Only got a huge en.
