My gcc trying to mate with my tiel??

Ok, I know this happens where birds do stuff like this...But really I didn't expect my 3 month old conure on the cockatiels back. The cockatiel is a female...Does this make the conure a male? We haven't dna tested it yet.

Not necessarily. We had a 12 yr old tiel and our 5 month old female was mounting him....the sad part was "he enjoyed it!!"

I believe I saw the galah x cockatiel hybrid somewhere.

Thats totally not my intentions with my little guys. I was just curious of this slightly odd behavior, since the gc is so young and the tiel never wanted to mate with any other tiel....But she lets the gc go to town.

I would guess that a conure and a tiel couldn't actually produce offspring. They're from different continents so genetically they're probably too different from each other. As far as I know all the hybrids involve birds from the same continent, and usually not too far apart from each other on the family tree.

As for the female tiel mounting the male, well, who says it always has to be "missionary position"? Rules are made to be broken, and it seems to me that this could lead to offspring if they're doing a good enough job of getting their vents together.

Oh no! I guessed that Indiana was female just cause Peanut mounted her several times a week. Could she just be a weird male? She has bright orange cheeks, but she's a lutino...

We have a "pair" of male cockatiels house together (both dna males) that will "mate" up to several times a week. They like to make a squeaking noise when they are "busy". We have had company over several times when they have chosen to do this and imagine our non-bird company saying "What are they doing?, But I thought they were both males LOL! My friend has two female YN housed together that also will "mate" not as often as the cockatiels but still quite often.

When housed together many same sex pairs of birds will go through the motions whether for dominance or companionship I don't think it has been proven. In many other species the same sex mating behavior is more of a dominance issue than for any true companionship with the dominant one in the pair assuming the "male" role whether both are male or female.
