Polyoma Virus Vaccine....?

How much does it cost? (generally)

Is it really worth it?

Who here has done it?

what do you guys think about it?

I'm thinking about vaccinating Bella and Tiko, but I'm kinda unsure.
Is it safe or are there any risks?

Thanks,

Micah

They mostly only vaccinate baby birds... mainly the larger breeds.

Id like to do it just to be safe...

I've had it done because I have 7 Eclectus. My avian vet told me that they all weren't at risk but because some of them I'm not aware of their background I had them vaccinated.I plan on having the other ones vaccinated
just as a precaution. It costs about $50-60.I wasn't aware they vaccinated the smaller birds against polyoma!

I didn't think they did smaller birds either but then I was talking to a lovebird owner who had it done... I wasn't sure if it as safe for smaller birds though... I obviously have to do more research!

haha thats where I take my fids too haha
Even though it's like an hour and a half away... Luckily I don't have to go every week, like I did when Tiko broke his leg.... considering the price of gas and all haha.
But there so good there :)

There are certain birds more prone to it. What I've been told is that most birds after a certain age, like age 1-3 depending on species, develop a natural immunity to it and are out of the danger zone for getting the disease. Other birds can be natural carriers for it, so until they are of a certain age they are considered a risk factor for it. While other birds, like caiques, are always always always at risk for it, they never develop the proper antibodies and natural immunity to it, so they have to be vaccinated for it as babies and into adulthood. Other birds, once they've been vaccinated as chicks, they are OK for life.

The only thing I can tell you is what my Avian vet told me about my 2 macaws. Because both of them checked out so well during their annual visit with no problems, he did not recommend it. He said he would give the shots if I felt strongly about it

I believe if my birds had been in ill health, he may have advised me differently.

That's one thing I love about my avian vet. He is not in it for the money. He truly loves these animals.

My vet I used for my horse? Different story. She tried to tell me 2 yrs ago my horse may have cushings disease because his hair was so long. Hello! It was December! Even in Florida, it does get cool and horses adapt to their environment and get the winter coat nature thinks they need. Of course, he does NOT have cushings disease - he's OLD. Older horses do not shed as quickly as younger horses. He shed out fine in the spring (as he should) and acts like he's 5 instead of 22. I no longer use this vet.

Is there any new information on the polyoma vaccine around? Trying to find a solid answer on whether or not to get the vaccine is... difficult. I've read articles by multiple veterinarians and some say yes and some say no.

Thoughts?
