Put simply, I'd tell them not to be so quick to judge each bird owner in general, especially if they had pets themselves. I'd say that it isn't abhorrent or inhumane if the bird's each and every need is catered for, mentally and physically- and if the bird is healthy and happy there is nothing inhumane about it. That's in a nutshell though, I'd have a much larger conversation (or argument) face to face!
