Im Asshamed Of Working In A Petstore:(

Today is my 21st b0day so i wanted to vist other naturew pet centers other than the one i work at .. well to my surprise the name nature might not be so well respected ..when i walked in there i heard nothing , no birds chirping no parrots talking :( i walked over to 2 hyacinth's named bozo and saphire they are 5 years old . I asked the lady if i could hold one and she said '' no we never take them out '' That broke my heart to see that someone would actually admit to neglect :( But hey not all stores are like ours we play with are birds non stop and everyone gets out atleast for a good 2 hours each ..at this store they had a B&G that looked horrible feathers all ragged and plucking one catalina very underweight to my look :( and plent of other horrible things , they had cockatiel cages which conatined 1 bird each most of the birds i will name will leave you with a feeling of wanting to yell:( 1 was 1 cage that had 4 senegals all huddled together in one corner , 1 cage had a pair of alexandriens shaking to death when approched...1 had 6 doves and ohh dont get me started on the poor lil finches ..our finches are in a really big aviary free to fly , theres were in really tiny cages and about 20 finches in each :(
I finally will admit im ashamed to work in apetstore line that has a such a store ..we love our birds they are like our away from home family and have toys , veggies fruits and plent of tlc:( What should i do about this , i cant just let it go ..I think i will talk to mister hagen this sunday he usally comes to visit our store :) any other suggestions?

I think that is an excellent idea. Also, is it feasible for you to go work at that store to whip it into shape?

AND - last but not least... Happy birthday!!!

I would mention it to Mr. Hagen; from my understanding doesn’t that family have a fair amount to do with their stores? I’m sure it’s a matter of no one has said something before and I bet he would be happy to know one of his employees cares enough to try to help.... I would try to do it in a helpful constructive way so he doesn’t feel attacked about the state of one of his stores .... just my opinion though
good luck and let us know how it goes!
Michelle

PS happy b-day eh :icon_mrgr

Hi Sweetie, I'm originally from Oka so I'm familiar with a lot of the Nature pet centers around the island of Montreal. Most of them are wonderful but I think I might know which one you are talking about... I went to one and there was a gorgeous Hyacinth that was just craving attention. I couldn't help but scratch his pretty little head through the cage bars, I couldn't stop wondering why a pet store would house such an expensive bird in the first place! Let alone keep him somewhere that the employees are afraid to handle him and give the proper care, last thing you want is a giant like that turning on you! I won't even start on the conditions of the other parrots... just like you say, they were crammed together and very scruffy looking.

Congrats on being pro-active in this situation, coming from a client, I really appreciate people like you. If only all pet stores would hire the good people!

The majority of the stores are great though, I always look foreward to going down home to do my pet shop tour! If you don't mind me asking, which store do you work at?

Happy Birthday!

I think you should talk to him.

Maybe even volunteer to go and train the employees at that store. Too often I see pet store employees who are intimidated by the birds, when all they really need is some training so that they feel confident enough to open the cage door. Another idea - maybe the Hy and other large birds could be transferred to your store where the staff is more hands on.

Either way - you shouldn't be ashamed for working in a pet store. I am proud of you for being there and making a difference in the lives of the animals that you work with everyday. If you didn't work there, then someone less informed and less concientious might take your place. :icon_smil

Now it's Friday night - get out there and celebrate!

Please say something

The birds can't talk for themselves. Please do the talking for them. Don't be ashamed of working in a pet store, I've seen some really good one's that care more about what they sell then the money. They admit they'll never get rich, but they can sleep at night knowing they are doing whats best for the pets.
Talk to him' I for one am proud of you. Joan

Or, if you don't want to break any laws, talk to Mr. Hagen about it. And if that doesn't work out, I'm sure there are plenty of animal rights groups or rescue centers who would be glad to hear from you. Or maybe you could teach their parrots to scream "HELP!" all day long. :icon_mrgr

Just do the right thing. And hope the people up there aren't as dumb as most people down here in Pennsauken.

I wouldn't be ashamed. If it wasn't for you, who would try to make this change? Yes, maybe you could get them transferred to your store, but that just means they will get new birds for the incompetent store. Maybe you could suggest for him to hire someone for that store who knows a little about birds and take care of them all day and keep them socialized. And by the way,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
On my 21st birthday, I requested my father to take me out to dinner and drinks. Whoa...what a mistake, I was doing shots of tequila by the end of the night. My dad said he never wanted to see that part of his sweet, little daughter again.
