Exclamation Help me with this duckling! (Possilbe Mallard duckling!)

A guy brought me a duckling, he was going to run over him but he saw him in time ! I have no idea how to take care of a duck or where is the nearest animal rehab in my area. What can I do until I can take him some where safe? He is in a medium size crate right now. Does he need to stay warm? What about food? I feel sorry for the little guy because maybe its mom was near .I have no idea what kind of duck he/she is. HELP!!

How to Take Care of Ducklings - wikiHow

heres some quick easy info

do you have a feed store to get a heat lamp from or duck feed? Before you go I would leave it maybe on a towel with a bowl of water, make sure the bowl of water is really shallow since they can drown in less than an inch

We have ducks around my house (there's a pond nearby). Everyone feeds them, but they seem to love my house the best...and its because I leave all the left overs from the macaw bowls out. They LOVE zupreem pellets But these are adult ducks. I would try calling local vets/shelters/pet stores to see if someone can lead you to a wild animal rescue. In the meantime, you may want to give him something soft to cuddle with and if he seems cold, maybe a heating pad underneath/on the side of the kennel to keep warm. I know they like to snack on corn, but they cannot digest seeds, and please, please don't give them bread It's very unhealthy. I'll keep looking and see if I can find any other info.

It looks like a baby Wood Duck. If it is really skittish, then I would say for sure it is a Wood Duck.

Game bird starter from a feed store is what it should eat. Keep a light bulb over it, so it can stay warm. Offer plenty of water in a bowl big enough for it to swim in.

It might not eat with you watching. They are very shy birds.

From your pictures, it looks to still have it's egg tooth. That will fall off in about 3 days of age.

I have raised 100's of waterfowl over the years. They are easy.

its a mallard, do you have a mechanics clip on light, or a lamp take the shade off, or a heating pad on low, under a towel. go to livestock feed store, pick up "start and grow". Offer lots of clean water, he will pick up food and rinse his mouth, they dont have saliva. for right now, tonight you can crush up bird pellets. I have raised ducks for a while ..

if you need, you can give him COOKED rice, a very small amount, if you have nothing else.
