KEYNOTE SPEAKER: SALLY BLANCHARD

One of the most recognizable names among ‘bird people,’ Sally Blanchard is well known for her theories on companion parrot behavior. She has studied and worked with birds for over 35 years. Having been a bird sculptor for over twenty years, Sally is an avid bird watcher. Instead of just checking birds off of a life list as she saw new species, she became fascinated with what they did and most of all, trying to figure out why they did it. She started a lifelong collection of bird books, which now numbers over 2,500. For further info: Companion Parrot Home

ALSO FEATURING: TERESA LIGHTFOOT, DVM

Dr. Lightfoot received her DVM from the University of Missouri in 1980. She completed an externship at the St. Louis Zoo, and has been practicing in Florida since 1980. Dr. Lightfoot is a Charter Member of the ABVP - Avian specialty and is currently Regent for this specialty. She has served as the staff veterinarian for the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary since 1987. Dr. Lightfoot served on the Florida Board of Veterinary Medicine from 1995 to 1999, and served as Chair from 1997-1999. She has authored over 100 articles on avian and exotic species and is an editor for the upcoming Avian Compendium Text and the European-based Exotic Pet Medicine Text. She is an editor of the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery and a reviewer for Seminars in Avian and Exotic Pet Medicine and Exotic DVM. She lectures frequently on avian and exotic medicine and surgery both nationally and internationally. Dr. Lightfoot is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Association of Avian Veterinarians Gold Star Award in 1998, the Florida Veterinarian of the Year award for 2000 and the 2001 Exotic Veterinarian of the Year awarded to her by the International Conference on Exotic. Dr. Lightfoot will be speaking on Psittacine Congenital and Nutritional Geriatric Conditions, Pediatric Conditions and Emergencies and ,also, new research highlights.

AND ROBIN SHEWOKIS

Robin Shewokis is the owner of The Leather Elves, a company that designs and manufactures enrichment devices for animals in captivity. In 2000 The Leather Elves began working with zoos internationally to enhance the level of enrichment provided. Since then Robin has consulted at zoos in the US, Canada and Holland and has distributed enrichment products worldwide. In the companion parrot community Robin has spoken at numerous parrot clubs, providing a workshop that helps companion bird owners create a stimulating environment for their pets. Robin also works to develop new enrichment products for companion parrots that will stimulate naturalistic behavior when presented. Robin has published articles on enrichment in national and international publications. She is the enrichment columnist for the Flyer, a quarterly publication of the International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators. Robin is a member of The American Association of Zookeepers and The International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators. Robin works closely with the AAZK enrichment committee as an advisor and is a member of the IAATE enrichment committee. At the 2006 AAZK conference Robin received a certificate of appreciation for her contributions to the field of enrichment with regard to management of captive exotics. What a great getaway weekend for the family or just a bunch of friends! Fun and sun on the beach and around two pools plus walk to St. Armands Circle for some great shopping and restaurants! All that in addition to hearing three nationally recognized experts on parrots and other companion birds!

(Be sure to let me know if you are planning to come because there is another more private event I would want to invite you to!)
