4 Freeflying Macaws in U.K Missing...

Sick as a parrot: zoo boss appeals for missing macaws

DALTON Zoo’s four free-flying parrots have gone missing, sparking fears they have been stolen, injured or become trapped.

South Lakes Wild Animal Park owner David Gill is concerned for the welfare of his four macaws and is appealing to Evening Mail readers who may have seen them.

As of today the brightly coloured parrots that can often be spotted flying around Furness have not returned to the park for five days.

Kara, Duke, Bubble and Squeak usually come back to the park twice a day to be fed and have their health checked.

The park boss is stressing that the bonded pairs should not be fed by members of the public because they have a strict diet.

Kara, who is red and green, Duke, who is scarlet blue and yellow, and Bubble and Squeak, who are both blue and yellow, were last logged by zoo staff on Friday afternoon.

Mr Gill said: “Most people in the area are very familiar with seeing large brightly-coloured macaws flying freely around the skies of Furness.

“The birds have had this amazing freedom for over 12 years.

“They come and go as they wish and they are logged for their health and welfare at the park twice a day.

“We are desperate to find out any information at all that would lead to the birds being found safe and well."

South Lakes Wild Animal Park can be contacted on 01229 466086 and Barrow police can be contacted on 01229 824532.

Parrot pining for his missing mate
Published on 05/03/2005

PARROTS missing from South Lakes Wild Animal Park have been shot at in Dalton, it is claimed.

Zookeepers found one distressed bird and are anxious to trace the other three after receiving calls saying they had been lured into houses and fired at.

Free-flying macaw Duke was spotted at the back of Hall Street in Dalton on Tuesday. He is now back at the park pining for his missing mate Kara. Bonded parrots never leave each other’s side.

Paired parrots Bubble and Squeak, have also been missing since Friday.

Park owner David Gill said: “It is heartbreaking to think what could have happened to them.

“They are part of the family here. We are desperate to get them back.

“Duke looked like he had been in a struggle. He would never leave Kara, this is very, very bad news for her.

“I have serious concerns for their health and welfare. We believe someone has been feeding the birds to try to attract them inside a house and capture them.”

Barrow police Sergeant Keith Healey said: “We are looking into the reports and we have made inquiries in Ormsgill and Dalton.

“If someone was shooting at the parrots then as a minimum they would face an investigation for causing criminal damage.”

Kara is red and green, and Bubble and Squeak are both blue and yellow.

They should not be fed as they have a strict diet.

Anyone with information can call the zoo on 01229 466086.
