Talking Questions and advice!

I am considering starting an aviary set-up with smaller birds. Does anyone have websites or anything that will give me more info.

What birds are compatible, and how many can be in what amount of space.

Also I am in an apartment so anything thats not really loud would be good.

Thanks Bunches

What kind of birds? Hookbills, finches, doves, etc...

How big would it be and what kind of budget to you have?

There is a sight that has a lot of info for an outdoor aviary and compatibility chart for finches. Hope it's helpful...Welcome to The Finch Niche

I don't have a really large budget. Umm Im sortof partial to finches and canaries. But like hookbills aswell. What other types of birds can go in an indoor aviary setting other than finches, canaries, and doves???

Thanks for all the input so far. :)

Oh does anyone have an indoor aviary? If so what all do you have in it and pics would be awsome!!

Parakeets can go in an indoor aviary but they don't get along with other birds too well. There is a website that has instructions for an EXCELLENT (at least I would love to make one if I had the room) indoor aviary and it looked pretty easy too but I can't remember what it is!! I will look for it tonight and put the link on here.

One of my aviaries is a community of canaries and finches. I have canaries, gouldians, long tails, zebras, european golds, red cheeks and painted firetails. these guys all get on really well. I also have 3 burke parrots and 3 turk parrots. There are some doves as well.

Canaries, cant recommend them highly enough. Problem is if you want them to breed then dont stick in finches. the finches have a bad habit of stealing nesting materials as soon as the canary gets up for a stretch. She comes back and her nest has been raided. I havent had any baby canaries for 2 years because of this. Next season I am putting the canaries by themselves in a spare aviary.

Doves. If you want sleep dont put them in. They hoot all through the night mosty from about 3.30am onwards. So unless you can sleep with coo coo going all night, not a good option. However the smaller diamond doves are a good choice, they do the coo coo too, but sleep in longer than the barnaby or turtle neck dove. Burke parrots are late sleepers and early risers. The wake the aviary early flying around in the dark before dawn, other than that they are really quiet.

Canaries sing their hearts out for about six months of the year. I love them, they are the best.

In another communal aviary I have some tiels, rosellas, superb parrots and red rumps. Red rumps can be aggressive at breeding time. Superbs are great in communal cages, just love them, not a bad thing to say about them. Rosellas - well I dont think they should be in captivity at all - I dont think they make good captured birds. JMHO Id rather open the door and release mine, I think they would be happier. Unfortunately cant do that.

Hope that helps
