Does your Bird(s) have a favorite television show?
A few weeks ago my spouse discovered that our 7 month old Meyers, Murray is totally captivated by some episodes of "Sunrise Earth". We get these hour long "ambient" nature programs shot in HD with Dolby 5.1 sound on "Discovery HD Theater". (BTW if you have DISH TV it's Ch364.)
If you haven't seen this show it is a feast for the eyes and ears. The producers go to mostly wild areas and shoot multiple perspectives on the sunrise in one hour of real time. They inter-cut the material and show it without any human narration or music. As you might expect birds are a big part of many of the shows. Our little Murray simply loves some of these shows. We DVR the shows and run the day's episode or one of his favorites nearly every morning. At times he seems to be calling back to the birds. For others he mimics the sounds. Not all of the episodes hold him visually but there are a few that seem to totally mesmerize him. Put him on his little table in front of the big screen and he sits there relatively still, cocking his head back and forth, for nearly the whole hour. It is phenomenal, partly because his usual morning behavior is quite vocal and active! Even though he is an African parrot Murray's absolute favorites include shows from North and South America: #1 Moose in the Morning; #12 Sequoia Light; #47 Peruvian Rainforest Canopy; #48 Andean Dawn at Machu Picchu. Interestingly, his current all time favorite may be #17 Wildflower Elk which was shot not too far from here at Pt. Reyes Nat. Seashore. I suspect it is because several of our backyard birds can be heard. But beware there is one episode, #49 Amazon Parakeets, that makes little Murray really agitated and visibly upset. So, we don't play it any more. It is a shame that there are none shot in Africa as I would love to see how he would react to these. Last edited by Geri; 07-28-2008 at 09:53 PM. |

That's fabulous and good to know. I don't really 'do tv' these days but my bird is not even one yet, so someday I might hook back into tv and I'll have to look for these programs. I agree, it would be interesting to see how he responds to Africa.

My husband puts on the tv and does not always pay attention to whats on and I told him I put the tv on for the birds so he found a cartoon and let them watch. Too bad it was sponge bob square pants. So now every time its on they get all happy.

My birds could care less what's on TV except for Zeke. He absolutely loves football. Whenever football is on he will climb out of his cage, sit right on the front and just watch. He gets so mesmerized by it that he doesn't even eat unless it's a commercial and don't you dare try and take him off the cage! It's so funny, it's just like a guy, lol. He also likes American Idol but I think that's more for the music...he sings along.

There is an episode of "Charmed" where someone on the screen whistles camptown races. My tiel goes crazy when ever that episode plays. He runs up and down his cage, full crown up, whistling it right back. My grandfather when ever he came over the only thing he could remember to whistle was camptown races, so spike always thinks it is my grandfather whistling it.

Thanks, we love the name too as it has a family connection, but interestingly we didn't name him. He is a re-homed rescue bird. I fell in love with him right away; learning his name just sealed the deal.

My guys watch Mike and Mike in morning on ESPN2 and this time of year I often leave a baseball game on for them. I'm not sure they watch it but it's there for them. They also listen to music; mostly classical but sometimes more popular stuff. I've heard about Sunrise Earth. I'm going to track it down for them. The only thing I worry about is Bing picking up whatever obnoxious bird call or animal noise he hears on these nature shows (a hard lesson learned from the Bird Sitter Video and Bing's ability to now scream like a macaw).

Basco the CAG whistles the Ed, Edd and Eddy tune most of the day. I suppose that is his favorite.
All of the bird rooms have their own TVs and I switch around from music to cartoons. They LOVE it.
