canary winged bee bee parrot

I have just become "mom" to a 16 year old canary winged bee bee parrot named Kiwi. He came from a single home, they are moving to a smaller place and can;t take him. He seems to have settled in nicely in the past 2 weeks. Any tips to help this transition time? I have the same food he had, but they had just put him in a new cage.

Yay for brotogeris parakeets! I have a Golden-winged parakeet. He is an amazing little parrot.

Canary-winged parakeets are so precious... I think that you'll loving having this little one in your life :)

I don't have much advice other than to be patient: he's in a new cage in a new home with new sights, sounds and smells. Try to be low-key around the little guy, if that makes any sense. Maybe sit by his cage a couple of times a day and just chat with him or even read to him outloud. Offer a favorite treat (millet, maybe or sunflower seeds).

Definitely check out Bev Marsh's site: Yellow-chevroned Parakeet (formerly Canary-winged Parakeet) and visit the broto group on Yahoo: Brotogeris : A friendly forum for the discussion of all aspects of breeding or owning Brotogeris.(Grey Cheeks, Canary Wings, White Wings, et

Best of luck and thank you for taking this little guy in!

Talking Hello fellow Bee-Bee friend!

Hi my name is Casey and I am a new owner of a Canary Winged Bee-Bee parrot too!!!
His name is Mac and he's about 2 years old, I just love him soo much! He is saying allot of words and he's only been with me one month! I would love to talk more about this particular type of bird's habits, likes dislikes and so on. One thing I can say for sure is THEY LOVE APPLES. If you want to befriend your new baby offer some apple from your hand, and talk nicely to him all the time. I am not too sure about 'transition time', obviously Mac is much younger than Kiwi so yours may have been used to something else for a long time, as long as he seems comfortable I would say play some soft music for him, and hide bits of apple in his cage so he is encouraged to move around in his new space. Good luck with Kiwi!

Any hints on resources I can read about training Kiwi? I am familiar with clicker training for dogs, but not birds.

Come join the Bird Click group on Yahoo. It's all about clicker training birds... who you will soon find are much smarter than dogs, but need more than verbal praise to get motivated (dogs are very easy to please, whereas with birds you have to make it worth their while ) The group is moderated by experienced trainers, but there are a lot of active participants that help you work through issues, give you atta boys, give suggestions, etc.

You need to be approved for membership, so be sure to fill out the box that asks why you want to join. Once you're accepted, introduce yourself and get started reading the "Files", which have a lot of step-by-step instructions.

Also get Melinda Johnson's book "Getting Started: Clicker Training for Birds". You can also get the book with a kit (clicker, target stick, treats) from Karen Pryor's site.
