I know some would disagree but

Thank god for Mytoos.com ! I had a man I know come up to me a month ago and tell me he wanted a large cockatoo. I know this man well and knew this was not the person for a too. He takes mediocre care of his birds. Not bad enough to intervene but bad enough to make me tear my hair out. He does not cherish his birds like most of us do. They are just pets to him.
He also has a newborn baby in the house. He did not want to hear anything negative. So I said listen. Go to this website. If you can sit there a full twenty minutes without flinching then maybe a too is for you.

Well a few days ago he came up and said Thank you ! A big too is not for me. It turns out he went to the website and the sound of the toos screaming woke up the baby on the other side of the house. It totally turned him off the idea of ever having a umbrella or a mollucan. Mytoos may have it's down points but it has it's up points also. One being it can put off potential Too owners who are not ready to have such a large, complicated, loud bird in their lives.

Good job Lynda :eusa_clap One more saved too from a rescue. I can tell my u2's screams drive my husband nuts and he looks at me like he wants to run to another room. I love it. It brings tears to my eyes. Love him, love him and his screams. I don't try to encourage it, but I know he needs to get them out and I'll let him. I found a great too site yesterday. hornbeamaviary.com. It's an aviary here in Ohio and I want to go visit it so bad. Check out the video of the cockatoo they have flying around outside on his own. Doesn't look like they have a cage for him and he's there every morning when they wake up. Just wanted to share this site with ya. Pretty cool.

As much as I think mytoos is an egregious "fright site", if they keep one stupid hairless ape from ruining the life of a too psittazen, then so be it. I am getting a bit less patient in my old age, and begin to feel that people who wish to purchase a large, socially dependent & psychologically complex bird should need to be tested, licenced, & bonded to be certain that if they (biped primate) flake out, the psittazen doesn't suffer. I've seen far to many horrors to put up with the "oh, but I just got married & my husband/wife is allergic/afraid/jealous/stupid", or "we just had a baby & just don't have time for the bird" (think sterilisation to keep this sort of fool from p*ssing in the gene pool), or my all time favourite: "Well, when we redecorated, we realised that the bird doesn't go with the furniture" (guarnteed bodily harm if said to me, or in my hearing).

I'm of the opinion that the large Too's- moluccans, tritons, greaters, and perhaps even umbrellas do NOT belong in the pet trade, for exactly the reasons you state. My Kiwi ( a Citron- and a BIG one at that) is loud, but it's not the calls that irritate, it's the glass shattering 'shriek' that she has..

I applaud anyone who can keep the larger toos successfully.. It wouldn't happen in my house, I won't even try. Good for you for discouraging his purchase!

My Niki M2, as some of you probably know, was an attention neglect case when she came to me bare chested and crying. Literally Crying. She still crys. A hungry human baby cry. It will drive ALL of us batty at times.... ok, OFTEN times.

She had fully refeathered within 6 months in my home and had been that way for almost 7 years. The crying and tapping had lessened as well.

She has now relapsed and has about a quarter of her chest under attack and is tapping and screaming more than she has in years. The general consensess seems to be that it is now breeding season related, she did afterall, lay her first egg. My point is, that once a plucker, always a plucker... it makes me sooooo sad to see her pluck, yet I can only try my best to get her to refeather once again.

As far as the mytoos is concerned, you have to take it for what it is. It is an extremist site. But necessary. I have sent a few people there that have known my (fully feathered) Niki and thought she was the sweetest thing since sugar. I tell them that it is graphic, and the worst case scenerio, but if they can find the least dramatic thing on there, and could still live with themselves and their bird if it ends up happening to them, then go ahead, get a too. The answer from all of them has been NO - Especially once they consider that they COULD end up with one of the more dramatic things on there as well. I also tell them that if they have any questions after reading that site, that I will answer anything I can and tell them more stories.

Perfect example. Friends of mine whom I gave Goose, my sun conure to, (whom they are PERFECT for her by the way) said "we're thinking of getting a too". I sent them to mytoos. He wrote back a half hour later and said he would stick with Goose. (not to mention Goose was given to them because she is JEALOUS, she tried to eat my scarlet macaw. I told them if they loved and wanted to keep Goose it is not a good idea to get another bird).

Lol

I wish my M2's and U2's were as quiet as the too in the recording at my toos.LOL

I have M2 that does a peacock immitation and you cannot stay in the room when he is doing it unless you are using earplugs, but the plus side is that he is a great bird and very smart so the noise doesnt matter most of the time.

It is funny because I have one of the most quiet U2s in the world. So I warn people all the time that see her she is not a " normal " too.

She never screams in her cage. But something we do is when she is out she has a scream time and we encourage and scream with her. We have been doing this since she was a baby and she has never felt the need to scream in her cage. She talks, sings and whistles but never screams.

I am glad people agree I did the right thing. I knew the minute he said something to me that this was a recipe for disaster and I had prayed all month the website worked. I was so relieved it did work and put the guy off his wants.

Someone on the board of my bird club just got a U2. A lady found our bird club websites and started calling board members listed on the site. Though my number was second in line I was not at home. The first person to answer got the U2 cage and all. Luckily it was a good bird owner who answered. But she had no idea what she was giving her bird to. She just wanted it out off the house that second because she hated the screams. I was so glad I was not home LOL I would have taken in the bird but I do not really have the time and resources for another large Too. My one is enough. But I thought it was very sad the way she went about finding her bird a home. That is why i say the majority of the human population are ignorant, thoughtless neanderthals.

Back in the "early days" of my parrot ownership, I would run around the house frantically cleaning anytime I knew someone would stop by. They'd come in and see everything tidy and the birds happily playing on gyms. They would, of course, fall hopelessly in love and figure they too wanted a piece of Paradise.

I no longer do that. I realized one day that it was people JUST LIKE ME who kept the "illusion" alive. Now, they come when they come and depending on which part of the program I've arrived at, its either tidy and quiet or messy and unbelievably noisey. THAT'S THE WAY LIVING WITH PARROTS REALLY IS.

As for My.toos being authenic, I think it is. Its been my experience (admittedly limited) that when a Moluccan wants to be heard, it can set off car alarms and house alarms! Buyer beware!

LOL my U2's only use their cage to eat poop and sleep(on the top) because they are never locked in their cage(they dont chew like the moluccans so i let them live with the greys and amazons in their little flock)

But the M2's have to be locked up whenever i am not in the room with them because they will steal anything that is not nailed down and chew holes in the walls and doors/door frames.

All of the birds here scream, sing, talk, etc when they are happy so its all good because i can always go outside to talk on the phone or go to a room that is quiet.LOL
