Question Play gym

Hi' I have finally managed to get all the fixing for two play gyms. My question is do you use screws to secure the pipe or some kind of glue. Also do you sand the pipe for better grip. Since my two Goffins don't really like each other I've deceided to make hanging gyms that hang over their individual cages can anyone see a problem developing with this way of doing it. Thanks Joan

Hi Cheeky,

You might want to try wrapping the "pipe" with vet wrap to help them with their grip. It's the same stuff that horse owners use to wrap their tails.

Generally, I like the idea of hanging the play gyms over their cages. But one thing that I would worry about is height aggression. I know there are several people that have chains hanging from their ceilings as well as toys, swings, boings, etc. I don't know how they get around this problem other than with excellent training. Good luck with everything (btw, I love Goffins too).

I think it's best to use an epoxy of some kind, I'm not sure which would be best though. Instead of using vet wrap I would suggest sanding the surface of the PVC for the birds to grip it. In my experience vet wrap gets gunked up fairly quickly and I'm not sure if the latex in the product would be entirely safe should the birds ingest some of it. You could augment some of the pieces to be safe wood, eg. unsprayed apple wood, in that case I would use screws to attach it after incerting the branch into the pipe.
