What do you do with molted feathers?!

Just wondering what some of you do with your fids' molted feathers?

Personally I keep mine in a jar, it's weird to some but for some reason when I change their papers @ the end of the day I don't have the heart to throw out their feathers lol.

Another thing is, are there any creative things we can do with them? My caique is too small to make those nice big "artworks" you see with macaw feathers...

Soo anyways, gimme your take! I am curious to hear.

Thanks all

Framed Feathers

I know what you mean about saving the feathers. We keep ours in plastic containers with each bird's name on them. I was at a bird show last year and saw a booth that had displays of framed art made from bird feathers. She had a great idea, but wanted way too much for the work. I decided that I could do my own and save big bucks. I went to Kohl's when they had a frame sale and bought a nice frame that had a double mat inside the frame. I placed a picture of the bird in one and the feathers placed in a decorative arrangement in the other. I also placed a name tag in the feather side. I think it turned out pretty good. We have it hanging on the wall above my husband's computer desk. After all, JoJo decided that was HIS person anyway. Here is a picture of my project. I hope it is large enough to see, but if not, I think you get the idea.

Painted Feathers to Benefit Parrot Rescue!

I saved my rescued B&G Macaw's feathers too, and finally discovered a great use for them as marvelous earrings. I paint them and donate sets of earrings & hairties to the Phoenix Landing Foundation auction. Photos of them are in my Feather Painting Album and if you have any extra feathers, they would be most appreciated - email me for my address, to help me create more feather earrings for the Fall Phoenix Landing auction. Lightbulb

For my smaller feathers, I bought the clear plastic Christmas ornaments and filled one with feathers from each of my birds and put their name on it. That way I have each bird represented when I put up my tree. With the larger ones, I have made some dream catchers for myself and friends. You can buy dream catcher kits at craft stores and use your own feathers instead of what comes with them. Of course if you are very artsy-craftsy, you can make your own from scratch.

We save all of the feathers from our birds as well and put them in zip lock baggies with each birds name on it. My husband makes dream catchers too. I really do like the picture frame idea and the christmas ornament idea as well. Great ideas.

I would love it if anyone had extra feathers to send me! I could return the favour by sending you a nice pair of earrings!

Feathers

I buy the styrofome balls and tacky glue the feathers all around them until they are completely covered then add a ribbon and hang them everywhere. I got really creative with the different colors and used the body feathers from parakeets, cockatiels, Senagals, conures, guinea hens, and peacocks. the slight curve works amazingly well in all size balls. I know a girl who is an artist, and is currently working on some HUGE project, using bird feathers- so I've been donating them to her. Cuz frankly I'm running out of places to store my cockatiel's feathers..

Saving moulted feathers

I also know of someone who makes crafts out of bird eathers, any size. She has American Indian connections and will pay for postage. PM me if you want to send your extra feathers to her. No use wasting all those moulted feathers! I will pass on her email address.
