First answer: He'll puke on you!
No honestly, you will know. He will look for you, wait for you, holler for you, and bond with you. He'll want to snuggle, cuddle and just be around you.

For Newton and me, it was almost instant. I had been on a waiting list for a B&G and the shop owner took me back to the nursery and said. "Take a look a this little guy. He's an 8 wk old Harlequin" She flipped back the baby blanket to his nest box and that little half-naked creature looked up and me and croaked, "Ha-wo!" It was love at first sight and we bonded within a day. I visited him at the shop everyday until he was weaned. I walked in one day and he yelled' Momma!!!, Yes I cried!

With Elliot, he had been at the shop since he was a baby, and when I picked up supplies for Newt, he was there. I had talked with him, but he really wasn't interested at that time. Once day I went in and he just zeroed in on me. We played, we talked, we sang, we squealed and everytime after that when I went in he would plaster himself to the front of the cage. They were really fussy about who Elliot went to since he has a birth defect with one of his wings and I told them I would work with him to see how it turned out. If he didn't accept me, he would at least be better trained, but we just clicked and home he came with me about a month later.

Our tiel picked us, We were at the pet store "just looking" getting our heads ready on picking up a tiel (price for the tiel, cage, food, etc) since it was like 5-7 years since we had last brought one. And spike, jumped right onto my mothers hand, the only one that didn't fly away, climbed up her hand, jumped over to me and wouldn't get off, he ended up picking out his cage, and a few toys and we walked out the store with him.

I love hearing the "we were just looking/not buying" and ended up with 1-## new family members stories.. hehe

oh these stories are awesome!

i had taken josh to the craptastic petstore here in town...he likes to look at the animals and play with the ferrets. i was walking over to look at the rats and i heard BBBBBRRAAAWWWWWWWWWUUUKKK
i looked around a display stand corner and i saw boogie, bobbing her head and looking at me
i went over and scritched her behind her head - i could tell there was a connection between us, kind of in the way she looked in my eyes
so i talked to the girl who was working there at the time and she said it was her bird that she had to rehome before fall because she was going out of state to college
i left, and when i got home i looked up patagonian conures on the internet - doddled about how much money i had and how long it needed to last, etc
and i was like, h*ll, i want her, so i went and got her right then
its been like butta ever since
lol

Oh, yes! My soon-to-be-coming-home baby Hahn's picked me, for sure.

After reading and researching, I had already decided I wanted a CAG or a SIE, and these are the two birds I focused on for my first couple of visits to the bird store. But...the shop owner showed me this cute baby Hahn's shortly before I was leaving on Saturday afternoon.

We didn't really interact that day, but I read further about Macaws and Hahn's in particular before my next visit the following weekend (all this being about a month ago, with 2-3 visits a week since then). The baby is just a delight, and when it sees me pop around the corner, it gets all excited in its cage and repeats, "Hello, hello, hello..." before I take it out of its cage. It clucks gently in my ear while it rests on my shoulder, preens my hair and exhibits all the classic satisfied and happy body language while we spend time together. It's so humbling and gratifying. I've just fallen in love with this baby, and can't wait to welcome it to my home after Christmas. I'm still waiting on the DNA results.

BTW...around the third weekend, the CAG who previously couldn't be bothered with me, flew of its perch and walked out of the "big bird" room to stalk me and the Hahn's. It followed us around in the next room, just like a shadow. Weird!

Talking

Hannah just stepped up on me when I least expected it, I was visiting a Severe macaw I had my eye/down payment on all the while getting the snot bit out of me by it(it hated me, now that I look back, I am sure glad I didn't get him) and next thing I knew I felt a huge foot on my shoulder and when I looked over and up there I was eye to beak with the prettiest Blue and Gold macaw I ever saw. Well I was scared shytless of the beak that could rip the nose off my face (cause all I knew by this time about birds was little birds no bigger than a conure) and she just leaned her big striped face down in front of my face till her eye was level with mine, and with that comforting look in her eye and a sweet low "SKWAAAAAAARRRRAAWWWWWK" I started to rest easy knowing in my heart that that was just her way of telling me that I am the one for her, the owner said that she wouldn't do that for anyone and he kinda panicked when he saw her on me(fearing a lawsuit for an impending loss of a missing appendage) I told him to just back off for a few minutes I trusted her and wanted to see just how string this trust was. Five minutes later I was like "What Severe Macaw? I want this one!".....................LMB

I'm pretty sure I've met your baby. . . . and he is awesome!!!

Sorry, back on topic now.

Out of my five, I would say that two of them chose me instantly, and they are both my zons.

With Peppers I was going out to a local reascue to do some volunteer work. I did not want a bird, I had no interest in getting one ever (haha, so I thought!). I went about my tasks that first night there and met most of the birds. Then it came time to feed them and get them ready for bed. I got to Peppers and I had to open the door because he had lock crocks in his cage. I opened it up and went to grab the first bowl and before I knew it I was getting a nose full of that wonderful zon smell. He jumped right of the cage, onto my arm and ran right up to my shoulder. The husband of the woman that runs the rescue freaked out and yelled for her to come in and bring the camera! Apparently Peppers had never before willingly come to anyone. He was looked at a lot (because he's gorgeous of course) but he had bit pretty much anyone who had tried to handle him. I didn't bring him home for a few months after that because I needed to learn more and get prepared but I pretty much knew that first night that he was mine.

With Hans, I had talked to his owner and I went out there just to meet him and see how things went. I did not plan on bringing him home that day. Well when I got there he was majorly excited to see me. He was talking up a storm and actually bit his owner trying to get to me. His old owner was amazed at how quickly he took to me and sent me home with him that very day!
