Took Kally to School With Me Today

At first when we arrived at school, I let her out and put her on a new perch that I bought her yesterday, I attached two new toys on either side and let her have a look around.....All she wanted to do was sit on my shoulder, she was nervous and scared.

My students started coming into the room and noticed that I had a parrot, well the first thing they wanted to do was come over and see her, by this time I had most of my students over at my desk asking all kinds of questions.
Yhis continued for about 15 min. One of my students(girl) was very scared of her, but at the end of the period she actually came over to Kally, stood in front of her and talked to her very softly, and the two of them got along. She (girl) was no longer scared of her..........Now she cant wait until I bring her back on Monday......... :icon_smil

Then in the afternoon, I had grade 10 students come in and one girl, saw Kally and ran for the door, she was so scared of birds that she actually started crying.............I had to go into the hall and calm her down..........This truely was very amazing to me, as to how some people are very frightened of birds.

The day went really well, about 3 oclock, Kally was pooped, and she sat on her perch and didnt move....................nor did she PICK ANY FEATHERS :eusa_clap ...............This was my whole intention of bringing her in the first place......................and man did it help.........no picking........

I know this is long, but I just wanted to share this very interesting day, some thing even shock me. And it was very interesting to hear about different storied thats the students had to say about people and their birds............and people that are scared of birds can now see just how loving they really are, like today when Kally was under my chin snuggling....it opened up another door into peoples hearts.

How cool to go to school and have a "mascott'. How I would have loved that. it would be great for your bird to socialise with other people plus the change of scenery, plus the learning the kids will get about birds also. I have a girlfriend who is terrified of birds. if mine are out when she is over I have to put them back in their cages. she likes them from a very very far distant place, locked safely in their cages, not to put their claws on her. (LOL). I respect her fear, but it is funny also. I have another friend and daughter (Rhianna) who is terrified of frogs. I love them. another one is scared of bugs - who knows!!!! anyway I think it is way cool to take your fid to work.

How Excellent!
It is amazing to see the reaction of kids and birds.
I can tell you that I have visited schools on numerous occasions...really two occasions stick out....
1st........In NJ, the national Guard does "static displays". this means the Aviation units
can fly into schools for the kids to learn a bit aobut the military and the helicopters. Because My hubby is in the guard, this kinda gives me the ok to sneak in and participate...usually as the videographer(is that a word? ) :aiwebs_01 **I'm tired,,,and its late**
well...I would also take Sampson Bell with me since he was so used to the Helicopters flying overhead, it did not phase him...One of the last "static Displays" (before the WTC attack) I went to the local school where the chopper was going to fly in and land. I brought the camcorder, and I brought Sampson. Needless to say...that little grey bird with the red white and blue bandana was a bigger hit with the kids then the Million dollar chopper and crew inside......
After that..I was there each year for "rain forest Day" with all my parrots, to teach the kids about the birds and thier needs.....
2.......another school in another county...asked me to come in and hold sessions with the kids and birds...I happily went with my DYH-OWA, tiels and Otis, my tag. This was Otis's first appearance..and I had hoped he would be good....the kids had a break between seminars for lunch...some of the kids did not know that we had birds in the one room...nor did I know they used the rooms as a lunch room also!!!!
One little girl came running in, twards her usual desk to find Otis on a perch next to her. She screamed, and ran to the closet to hide...at the same time..she scared Otis, and he took off flapping...and guess where he landed?? Yep..in the closet with the girl still screaming...It was a scene out of some comedy show....a little blonde screaming her head off at this parrot who is at her feet....and this little grey ball of feathers looking back up at her Growling back as loud as can be because he is scared of her... :aiwebs_01
She ran out of the closet..and I Ran to get Otis. He just looked at me like
"what teh h*ll was that?"
Overall....the day went well**LOL** and Otis was a very good boy at each invitation after that!

That is really cool that you got to take Kally to school with you. I always loved when we would have programs at school that featured parrots. It didn't happen to often, but was great when it did.

Lisa, the story with Otis had me ROFLMAO. That is too funny. That poor little girl, I can only imagine the look on her face when he came in the closet after her.

Em,

She will be staying with friends of ours, her cage will be sitting right beside a hugh fish tank, she loves to watch the fish swim. :) They have a hugh house with a window that runs from on side of the house to the other, Kally loves to look out and see the world :)
She was with them when we went to Florida as well, as she had a good time. They are so good to her,

Ingrid

I think that is great that you got to take her to work. I think it's fabulous that she didn't pick either. So are you going to start taking her to work with you?
Once I learn more about birds (everything possible) I would love to take Rico into schools or nursing homes. I'm a little concerned with this though since Rico is a cockatoo. If I did if don't think I'd let anyone touch him, for their own safety. Now that I think about it, that might be a little cruel. It's like saying "look at this fascinating creature, no sorry you can't touch it".
