If you make a cage you have to make sure the wood and wire are bird safe. The wood can't be treated with anything and the wire must be zinc free. I was going to make a cage for my birds but to be honest, with the price of the wire it was cheaper to buy one. I think I saw a cage about the size you are looking for the other day. I will find the site and post it on here.

I have a handmade flight cage for my canaries, it is huge, and they love it. The top is finished with crown molding, and the bottom is finished cabinet doors. The flight part is plenty big enough for my flock.... lots of flying room..

Here is the link. It is not quite the same size. It is 40wx20dx19 3/4h. If you look on ebay and on craigslist people usually have them for a lot less. I have actually placed an ad on CL saying I was looking for a cage and got a really nice big one for free and another for really cheap. I just put the minimum size I wanted in the ad so I didn't get offers for cages I didn't want. Not only that but if you can find a smaller cage to put him in until you can have the money for a larger cage that will work. Amazon.com has some cages on there also. Good luck. If I see anything else I will let you know, I'm cage shopping too!

I could be wrong, but I am seeing the bar spacing for that cage as a 1/2 inch - that is as small as they come. Maybe you misread the 1/2 or maybe I am misreading it, but I thought I would bring this to your attention.

yes, 1/2 inch bar spacing is as small as it gets. The wire that you use for aviaries and cages for finches and canaries is different since they don't climb and chew on the wire. You can use regular wire then and it's not as big of a concern.
