Just plain wrong.

Today I saw something really sad :icon_cry:. I was walking around the flee market when I saw a little bird store. I went inside (I can never pass up a bird store!) not expecting much maybe some supplies and cages, but I was wrong. There was lots of birds all living in filth, there was even a cage that had about enough room for 2 parakeets ,but it was packed with about 20 parakeets. There was an Amazon that was losing its feathers badly. I wanted to just take all the birds and nurse them back to good health ,I mean wouldn't every bird lover want to....

That's too bad. Did you say something to the owner?

Those places aren't good with birdkeeping, as far as I know. Also, an uninformed lady bought me a budgie, Kiri'nedra, from such a place, and the poor girl died in two weeks.

It's so sad that places like this stay open. If a health inspector can go in and inspect restaurants (and demand changes be made if they aren't up to par), why can't someone go into pet stores? Does it happen and some just get over looked? I just don't understand. I stay away from places like that, it's too sad.

If I were you I would have said something to the owner. I would have been as nice as can be but I would have gotten my point across. I went into a local pet store by me and they always had the most beautiful birds. Very well cared for until they realized they could make more money selling puppies. I happen to stop in there one day and mentioned that the cages were filthy, no toys and dirty water. I commented on the ekkie that was in a cage on the floor and was not happy about that. Well before you know it I received a phone call a couple of days later from the owner and she was telling me how sorry she was and that I was right she was being a little lax with the birds because the pups required more of her time. I told her I didn't mean to insult them but I was just looking out for the birds welfare. She thanked me. She didn't want me to start bad mouthing her store for fear of losing customers. They found a home for the ekkie within 2 weeks to a good family. They no longer sell the very big birds and the smaller birds are better cared for. They needed a wake up call. I do stop in on occasion to browse and so far so good. Sorry this was soooo long. I hope I didn't bore you. Mela

Most pet stores are regulated if they sell animals. I know in several states, animal control inspects the sites once a year. You might want to call your local animal control and file a complaint. If you can't find the number your local police department can steer you in the correct direction, or you might try calling your local Humane Society or ASPCA for the number. Owners of animals (that includes pet stores) are required by most state laws to provide proper food, water, shelter and vet treatment.

Every person who complains to proper authorities makes a difference in the life of poorly kept animals. To say nothing is a terrible thing.
