My poor conures

Hello folks.
This weekend my beloved Fletcher and Orsola died.
Fletcher was a Sun Conure (6 yr old) and Orsola a Green Cheeked Conure (4ish).
I was actually away doing a sponsored cycle run from London to Paris when it happened, but hubby and the kids were here.
The birds were in our den up in the back garden. They were inside a big strong cage.
When hubby went to open up on Sunday morning, he found the two of them on the bottom of the cage.
Their food container on top of the cage had been chewed at, and the lid was found out in the field next to us.
There were feathers and mess scattered about the cage, so there has been a bit of a panic.
We are guessing that the fox, who has been prowling around a lot recently, has got into the den and tried to get at them.
He has been unsuccessful due to the strong cage, but probably "startled them to death".
Has anyone else known this to happen?
Hubby didn't know to keep them in the fridge, so the avian vet didn't want to carry out post mortems.
I feel so so bad about it. I wish I'd been here. I might have checked on them sooner and managed to help them. Accepting their premature deaths is one thing, but thinking that they might have been lying there suffering is unbearable.
I really am so heartbroken.
Linda

Heart attacks easily happen... storms can even cause them to happen to our birds.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear of this. It is possible that they died of shock from heart attacks.

Oh Linda I am so sorry about Fletcher and Orsola.

A thousand years ago when I was little.... our birds were frightned to death by a neighbourhood dog. The scenario you described sounds exactly the same. Heart attacks happen very quickly and they do not suffer like you described in your remorse. The strong cage you have saved them from what could have been much much worse. What happened is nobody's fault. We all expereince guilt thinking we could have done something more or different. That is normal. I hope you know that unfortunately these things happen and you can be at peace in your hearts that you did your best and they had a good life with you!
Our thoughts go out to you at this time.

Oh no! I'm so sorry for your loss. What a terrible thing to happen to your beloved birds.

I'm so sorry for your loss... It wasn't your fault at all, so don't eat yourself up about it. They had a very good home with you! R.I.P little guys.
