Questions about keeping multiple species of birds?
Hello all! I'm glad to have come across this site, seems like a great bunch of friendly, knowledgeable people. I have enjoyed reading your posts and love the pictures you all share!
I'll give a little history before my question. I have a 7 year old Nanday Conure, we have been together for almost 2 years now, this is his 4th known home, but finally he has hit the jackpot, he'll be with me forever. After about a year with the Nanday and everything going smooth, I rescued a young green cheek conure. Tragically he has recently passed and we both miss the little guy a lot. The Nanday and GCC never really got along great, would fight if left alone, but at the same time you could not separate the two, they had a love hate thing going on I guess. If either was taken out of the room, they would scream for each other, I even had to get king size sheets so they could be covered together at bedtime and see each other, otherwise they'd call each other (soo cute) Between the passing of his buddy, and me leaving him in an empty house while at work all day, I feel bad for him. Don't get my wrong, he spends 1-2 hours out of his cage while I get read for work in the morning, we shower together, have breakfast together, then when I get home he spends a few hours with me around the house. I plan on getting another conure eventually (blue crown, cherry head, or maybe a sun). Although finding breeders in my area is proving to be difficult, when I can find one I'll be getting him/her. I have always enjoyed seeing large indoor flight cages with with several budgies in it, and have been thinking of getting a few. I have a large cage setup for it and everything. What do you think the Nandays reaction will be to have budgies in the same room? I would imagine he would enjoy the extra noise and company. My concern is also for the budgies, what will there reaction be when the Nanday does his screams (he is LOUD at times). Any input on this would be appreciated. |

I think they'd all do well together, just not interact. your Nandy will definitely enjoy the company of the budgies, and will be amused by watching them flitter around and chirp. I know of someone who's conure actually hangs out with her fully flighted flock of budgies all day long.
So overall, I think they'd get along, even if they don't interact.

I'm not sure if this is a exception to the rule or not, but my six birds are in two different rooms (because of space issues, not fighting). My males (Amazon, Goffin, CAG) are all in the living room, all have open cages all day, and we've never had a single issue. The CAG and Amazon don't have full flight (but we hope that will change!) and my Goffin flys from cage to cage to visit them. In our bedroom we have a female Goffin, a GCC, and a budgie. The budgie doesn't leave his cage but my GCC will go visit him and has figured out how to open the door... no problems. He has also decided that the Goffin's huge king cage is better suited to him than his own cage so he spends his time in there with her and neither of them seem to mind a bit. The living room birds do visit the bedroom as well with no issues. Everyone seems to know what they can and can't do and it's made our home so wonderful!
