Cool Cockatiels

I am considering getting a new cockatiel and i was just wondering what temperature they feel comfortbale in or the coldest they wil feel comfortbale in and i also heard somewhere that if you have to go to school and they will be left alone that that is ok with a tiel becuase they can entertain themselves for long periods of time is this true???

Cockatiels will be comfortable in the temperatures you are comfortable in (so long as you don't live in arctic temperatures!). They're pretty adaptable. Mine live outside, and don't mind the cold of winter (because it comes on slowly) and the horrid heat of our summer.

About leaving them alone... yes, they can be, but you need to make sure they have plenty of toys to keep them amused! Even swapping toys around regularly, to give them some variation. Then you need to make sure you give them loads of TLC when you get home, and if they're tame that they get out and have a good play and wander.

Mine like it about 68 degrees. It seems to suit them well. Their temperature ranges should not be lower than 65 degrees or higher than 75/80 degrees.

Naturally dusty, but very loving, cuddly birds. The males can learn to talk and whistle. Females are more quiet and more prone to egg laying issues.

Merry, a lutino, around 1 year of age, talks and whistles up a storm. His favorite pasttime is sitting on our shoulder talking to us.

Peanut, a whitefaced, around 26 weeks of age, is just starting to talk and trying to learn to whistle (still has a way to go, but is still young). He is more active than Merry and loves to prowl around and get into things.

my tiel lives in the hot climate, 42 degrees celceus. They can adjust to most temps, if it's freezing i'd be making sure you had a heater & he's away from drafts. They catch colds too easily.

They can entertain themselves as olng as they have something to entertain themselves with.

It's best to buy from a breeder as that may make a big difference in the way that the cockatiel interacts and plays with toys. I have a female tiel from a breeder, and a male tiel most likely from a petstore (or never socialized). Casey loves headscritches and hanging out with me, while Clyde hates being handled (though he prefers being out of the cage with Casey than being stuck in a cage with two budgies, one who is hyperactive... so he now tolerates being handled).

I own 7 birds, 2 bourkes, 2 budgies, 2 tiels, and a cherry head conure. I am also enrolled in public school, so therefore I leave at 6:40am and don't get back home till about 2:30pm. Before leaving I make sure that they have food and water, and once I return I let Clyde out of the cage (he lives with the budgies, the bourkes are in a different cage) so that he can be with Casey. This is also when I give Casey more lovins and interact with Noel (conure) when she permits. In the afternoons and evenings is when they also receive fresh foods and the like.
