A Gladiator Diary

As some of you know, I now have my gladiator...Maximus! He is a big, tough, intimidating...baby parrotlet. I wanted to start this thread to ask questions, get advice, and most importantly, have a good time doing it. I am in New Jersey so I wouldn't mind if this became a "local" thread. "Bennys" or "Shoebys" if you're from the south, are also welcome. (A little NJ humor) I'm 32, the owner of Rack 'Em Billiards in Freehold and emperor/servant to my new bird. He was born on 6/17/08 and is very nervous in his new home. He eats from my hand, but is still afraid of me. He was staying on the floor of his cage until 10 minutes ago when I turned around and he was sitting on his cuttle bone. So let's have some fun dammit! :)

So little Maximus was just hanging around the floor of his cage, until one of my customers started whistling at him in a high pitch very short whistle. He ran the corner of the cage closest to her and it seemed like he was looking for the source of the noise. She kept whistling and all of a sudden, he just started climbing all over his cage and playing with his toys. It was amazing, like a bird whisperer or something lol. He made me almost wet my pants...he was walking along his perch, and just walked right off, he hit the bottom, stood up and looked up at the perch with a, "why the hell did you do that to me" look, hilarious!

How cute! My daughter is getting a parrotlet as soon as one comes available from our local bird guy. We would have liked to have gotten one from Huntress, but the shipping would have been a little too costly for us. Congratulations! And stay patient, he will come around ... sounds like he is on his way :)

Not much has changed today, still scared still eating from my hand. He has the cutest little chirping I've ever heard. A quick question, is there anything I could look for that maybe he was not weaned fully before I got him?

Odie was hatched May 20th and I brought him home on Aug. 19, so he was about 13 weeks.

My tiel only wants to eat his food, and Odie likes to go after Chico's tail. The green cheek is another story though...the green cheek wants to kill Odie. I'm hoping this will change, but even so I wouldn't leave them out of the cage together unattended.
