Making Bird Toys

I am hooked on making my own bird toys. But I cannot color the wood pieces like the ones in books and the ones I have seen here. I am sure they were handmade too. Can anyone tell me how to produce the bright wood colors? I tried food coloring but they look drab. We will be bringing our baby home soon and would like to make some nice toys. I have ordered cute plastic parts. the Rockport Roost has a nice selection.And great ideas as well. Also is there a site you know of I could purchase bright color wood pieces.
