my oldest one I lived with was over 35. she was a wonderful Orange Wing amazon and I was her second mom. She was wild caught and had a hard life.
I believe she was used as a bait bird to catch others for importation. She had a bad leg and foot. They used to steak them down to the ground and the distress calls would call other parrots into the net trap. Otis, my tag was also up there in age, being he was an import as well, and importation stopped in 1991. definitate age? undetermined. I was his gazillinth home, traced all over the united states. He was a rescue...and a very loving boy. My oldest tiel was 22 when he passed. Again, I adopted him when he was about 10. My oldest now, is Stirling who is in his 20's. He belonged to someone, and my father adopted him in 1991 ish. When my father got ill, Stirling came to live with me. Harley my DYH was born in 1989. so that makes him almost 19. Still very young for a zon. Again, an adoption because he was unwanted. He has been with me since he was 2. my others are all youngin's

Hi Lisa-Wow that is so awesome that you have lived with all these older birds. 35 y/o is so awesome! But so sad that they have all been rehomed so many times. But thank goodness there are so many experienced and caring owners willing to open their hearts to these birds in need.
That was kind of one reason for this thread. I was wanting to find out if they were all rehomes or anyone has just like had their parrot companion for like 55 years! That would be so cool. That is really sad about the OWA...I never realized they did something as terrible as steaking them down. Poor babies. Thank you for your response. |

I don't know how old my oldest bird is... heck, I don't even know WHO IS the oldest! My cherry head is estimated to be about 17, but for all I know, she could be older than myself! She's been with me for over 6 years now. My mitred is 13 (thank you leg bands!) and his parents were wild caught. I adopted him last October.
My oldest tiels (from my knowledge) are probably about 9+ years in age... they were originally adopted from a shelter, kept for a couple years, and reproduced... and kept for a few more years before I adopted them... They are Pistachio & Kiwi... I actually suspect that they may be older. Currently, my oldest budgie is at least 8 years old, if not a tad older... although I've had one live to be about 10-11, but he wasn't in the greatest shape when I adopted him. My oldest bourke, well I'm not really sure how old she is. She's 10+ in age, possibly even 12 or so now. I got 5 years ago, and the owners forgot how old she was... said she was at least 5 years old, if not 7 years old. Her little sister is around 5 years old (actually, just over 5 years old). Most of my birds are rehomes, and all that I've mentioned thus far, accept for the 5 year old bourke, are rehomes. Now, the one that I've had for the longest period of time thus far is Casey, who is a 6 year old cockatiel. She was born June 22nd? and I've had her since Nov 16th, 2001. She was handraised, and was a gift to me. A month later, Dec 22nd, I was given Noel the cherry head. Next year I was given the bourkes... and it just continues from there.

My oldest is a 24 year old TAG. I also have a tiel (who lives with my BF) who is likewise 24. Next is an 18 year old Eclectus.

My Caesar is only a little over a year old, but I hope to have him for many years to come! No matter WHAT I will always keep this little guy with me, come hell or high water. And I know (morbid as it is) if anything happens to me, my mum will keep him, as she loves all animals great and small, even if she knows nothing about parrots. (she'd research them, I know)

So cool to hear about the older birds. Thanks for your replys. I thought there would be more people with older birds.
But it is really impressive to hear about a 29 year old bird and all the 20 somethings....... And Monica you have quite a few who aren't babies too. Very cool. So is there an age where they pretty much settle into 'this is who I am.........like it or lump it'.....or are they always going through stages and changes like we do as humans? And curiosity leads me to wonder if some parrots can get to be 50+.........where are the rest of them? I suppose people now a days are much better informed about how to give the best care and AV medicine is better these days. So there is bigger possibilities of seeing these longer life spans? Thanks for the responses! |
