Judge Judy dead Parrot case

There is a lesson in this story for everyone who owns parrots......please take this as a warning. Before using ANYTHING WITH ANY CHEMICAL, OIL, SCENT, TEFLON etc etc think twice about your parrot.

I'm watching Judge Judy right now, and theres a lady who had an African Grey, Severe Macaw & a TAG. She had some guy come in to sand down her floors and seal them. She is claiming that he killed all 3 of her birds because he didn't tell her the seal was toxic. She says she took all 3 birds outside on the patio, along with her child, while they were working. They had to open the windows because of the fumes, and the fumes are what killed her birds. One bird died outside immediatly. She wants him to pay the vet bills, because he never told her that the seal was toxic.

Judge Judy just told her that she needs to accept responsibility for the death of her birds, because he was sanding and using chemicals, and whether he told her it was toxic or not, there would still be dust kicked up, and fumes.

The floor guy said he felt bad about her birds, but she needed to make sure they were out of danger. I don't think it's the floor guy's responsibilty to make sure her birds are OK. He said they should go outside, but if he doesn't know about Parrots, he wouldn't think that them being outside would hurt them. He told her that because of the seal, she'd be better off outside, because of the fumes.

I agree, she said, they were family members, one of them just dropped dead, and the others died on the way to the vet. I don't think any of us would have their birds near the home during this process for at least a couple of days....! I don't self clean my oven when Pita is around. I wait till Pita is asleep to color my hair...etc etc etc.

Anyway.....It's sad, but she should have taken better precautions with them especially if someone is coming in to use chemicals in her house. We are all so very careful about what we do in our homes, because of our birds. We all know how any kind of chemicals can affect our birds. EDUCATION !

Yeah...I agree.

We cant expect strangers to take responsibility for keeping our family members out of danger. They are HER birds and it's her responsibility to know what can harm them. As unfortunate as her situation is she has only herself to blame.

I'd like to ask the managment to redo my bathroom tiles but I'm afraid of just that, toxic fumes. The tiels aren't really used to travelling and I'm not sure what safe place I could take them to. So I just don't say anything about the decrepit tiles. I've also stopped dyeing my hair. It's very sad about those parrots being killed like that. I guess the woman thought the porch was far enough away from the toxins, i.e. didn't realize how toxic the floor sealant would be. I also think, isn't about time we stopped using such toxins for the sake not only of our birds but ourselves.

Sometimes it's difficult to know what is bad and good. Some things people just take for granted, unfortunately; like teflon. But, ...sanding and sealing a FLOOR? lol Heck, I'd be a lot farther away than outside on the patio! Personal responsibility is sorely lacking in many, many, many people. :(

Jannabellsmom, I also stopped colouring my hair. Not from a noble cause though, I just can't afford the thousands of dollars a week it takes to keep it brown while raising a teenager. My grey can burn right through hair dye! lol

That is such a sad story all around. She lost her birds, and the poor guy who was doing her floors was sort of an innocent bystander. It was her fault at the root of it, they are her responsibility. I know when my parents had their floor done (just last month) they had to stay at a hotel for three days! And all the animals were boarded. Those fumes are incredible.

Honestly, if all of my birds died like that, I think the last thing I would be worrying about is money. Who has enough time to go after someone in court for something that petty anyway.

Bottom line is that she should have taken the precautions of taking her fids far, far away from the house while this was going on. If I even think there is a case where something might harm my birds it doesn't happen.

Just last week I went rounds with my landlord who sent someone over to spray our house with pesticides. I told her no way unless she wanted to pay the boarding fee for seven parrots. She decided to send someone over anyway to spray the outside (without telling me first), and I still told them absolutely not when they got there as there is always a chance that the pesticides could come through a crack in the window, the heating and AC vents, or even come in on our shoes. Not to mention the fact that our cockatoo loves going outside and playing on our back porch. I made it very clear to her that the next time she sends someone over to do something to the house without informing me first we would have problems. My landlord was well aware when we moved in we had parrots and she was okay with that.
