I was annoyed... so I wrote a poem.

OK... I am getting sick of all the stuff that supposedly you can NEVER do around your birds. The whole thing where everything leads to hormonal aggression has put me right over the edge. If you cannot pet a bird (who falls asleep when I do so... if that is breeding behavior I would like to know if they mate in their sleep!), give it a kiss, play peek-a-boo with it, beak wrestle with it, and generally enrich it's life... why would you even own one? Because it matches the color scheme of the room? Because you like getting up at 7am on a Saturday to jungle sounds?

In any case. I wrote a poem. Granted... many of these are definite no-no's. I just was feeling annoyed by everyone adopting the latest study to come out... half of which have NO scientific proof or merit. If I followed every one of them... I WOULD have to put my fids in containment bubbles!

I don’t use air fresheners anymore,
My house will just smell funny.
And since scented candles are also out,
I’m saving lots of money.

Vacuuming might raise up dust,
Which might just annoy their tract.
But lying on linoleum to watch TV
Is uncomfortable point of fact.

I only use vinegar to clean.
The bathroom now smells sour.
And I can no longer bathe the birds in there,
Vinegar won’t kill mildew in the shower.

We don’t buy seed because it is bad for them,
And pellets are a catch-22.
Some have “poisons” we didn’t know existed…
What is a parrot owner to do?

We can’t give kisses to their little beaks,
We are afraid they will die of infection.
And we don’t dare pet them anymore…
They might think it is “breeding affection”.

We only buy organic foods.
Because pesticides are on all the fruit.
We found out they might be on frozen veggies too
So we are looking to file suit!

We are now all on a raw foods diet,
We had to get rid of all our pots and pans.
And we no longer eat a lot of foods…
There is zinc leeching from the cans.

Their toys no longer are pretty colors
The dyes, they may be bad.
Latex and plastic are out as well…
Studies on them are the latest fad.

And we have to scrub the floor of their cages
More than we one did
Newsprint has ink, corncob and shavings have dust…
They all are bad for our fid!

We cannot cover the cage anymore
It leads to nesting aggression.
And sunflower seeds are definitely out
Even for training sessions.

We sat down and thought really hard
And came to just one conclusion
We are putting all the parrots in bubbles
To handle all these exclusions!

Excellent poem! lol

I totally agree. There's being safe and there's being crazy. For example, kissing a beak. Last I checked, I'm not pushing my tongue down a bird's throat and hawking a loogie (is that what it's called now? LOL).

For as insanely careful people are about every little itty bitty thing that MIGHT (not proven fact) be a huge harm to their birds, I'm seriously amazed there are birds out there in the wild. Heck, they should be dead by now for all the dangers they face.

Being careful is fine, it's our responsibility to keep the bad things away from our birds, but holy cow over-doing it to the point of extremism isn't healthy for the birds either! It's like "Don't ever let your bird on your shoulder!" ...my buttocks I won't! Hmph

...sorry, I'm having bouts of anger issues right now. lol

I am with ya...

I have 3 VERY cranky molting fids. One of which won't let me near him to get the pin feathers he cannot reach and yet screams incessantly... especially when he sees I am attending to one of the other two! (anyone want a BCC with phychiatric probs? LOL)

My daughter dropped her $300 cell phone in the pool.

Child support for same kid is in arrears 3 months now... and bills are overdue!

Changing over computer system at work... and it is getting ugly!

Want to move by Oct 31st.

Major probs with my gastro-intestinal tract. Only good point of that is I have lost about 15 pounds in less than a week. Being hungry and not able to eat makes one VERY unsociable!

About the only thing that IS keeping me sane is my nightly snuggle sessions with Dudders. Down point of that is his crying for a good 30 minutes when I wake him back up and place him in his cage. "Sorry bud... ya cant's sleep with me... I will squashes ya!"
<sigh>

Forgot to mention that Taylor's health care will not pay for her ADHD med (want me to use their "preferred" ones... which will NOT work. We tried them... they either did nothing... or made her so moody with her Bipolar that I threatened to ship her to the idiot that is refusing the appeal!) and she is flunking at school despite everyones best efforts.

When she was on the Daytrana... she made honor roll!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

/hugs and offers you Xaf for beating.

Really, he loves it. When we play batminton, we use a birdie, alright...

My issues are petty. Just general crankiness and desire to maul a few humans that cross my path, or at least a medium sized city...

(disclaimer: Xaf is never beaten or used as a batminton birdie. ...much)

big hugs to everyone having one of those days!! Today has been a rough one for me too because my grandfather passed away thursday and today (right now actually) is his funeral/interment in Arkansas and I'm here in Colorado. Robyn, I think you've got it worse though... major hugs to you! I know about the med issues... we have them with our oldest son and his epilepsy all the time.

Tina, thanks for the laugh!! Badmitton birdie.. LOL

mmr.. your overprotective birdie love has taught me much so it can't be all bad!

Incidentally... I really do hate the no air freshener thing!!! LOL We own a very gassy 8 year old poodle who tries to cause a household evacuation daily.

And I couldn't live without birdie kisses!! (Sans loogies of course LOL)
