Fattening foods...

or ones that stimulate appetite would be even better!

Come on all... gimmee a list!

Dudders is way skinny. Vet has confirmed it is NOT medical. But as he only will eat when I am present... and I cannot sit by his cage 14 hours a day, muchless handfeed him that often... I am at a loss.

This bird is also OCD. If it is icky to hold or gets his beak messy... forget it!

We have tried:
Pearlized barley (limited success)
Quaker Oats (too beak messy)
Pasta (too foot icky)
Rice (same as barley)
Nuts (hey, fat here is GOOD. But he is not a big nut fan)
Human Baby food (fruits and veggies) - alone and on bread, barley, etc (too beak messy. will lick it off spoon though)
legumes (limited success)

This is a bird who finds GRAPES too messy to deal with for cripes sake! And he does not really like seed even. Pellets are a "bare minimum" for sustenance source.

Any ideas? I really do NOT want to resort to steroid injections to get this guy's appetite up! I figured it was a molt issue... but he is almost done molting and not gaining an ounce.

BTW - we do LOTS of veggies and some fruits which are all hit and miss. What I need are some "healthy" high carb foods.

hmm
have you tried not cooking the pasta all the way? just almost all the way?
i mean we wouldnt really like it that way but i have found that if i take some out before it is done and give it to chickie baby after it cools it leaves no mess on her feet at all

what if you add whatever oil it is thats good for them to some of his food?

Strangely enough... I have yet to do much egg! I do worry about the high protein level though.

He loves pizza crust... I need a recipe for BIRDIE CRUST!

Have you tried the cooked meals like Beak Appetite? Our GCC wouldn't touch any of the veggies we would give him no matter how we offered them. I made the kitchen sink recipe, and he turned his nose up. We figured we'd try one of these, and he devoured it. He has pretty much liked all of the ones we've bought so far.

Our new Sun conure was only on pellets and seeds when we got him. He's having a hard time eating anything else. You may want to give it a try. It does have the consistency of oatmeal though.

Dang Robyn... are you a mind reader?? LOL I was just sitting here eating pizza listening to Alfie scream at me because his old parront used to feed him pepperoni pizza and was wondering if there was a birdie friendly version out there.

A conure with OCD... and I thought my fids were strange! LOL I've been trying out new foods with the fids and all of mine love pears, everyone will eat eggs except Pedro (she won't eat anything but pellets and seed), only Marti will eat green beans, they all like corn on the cob. I have never seen those "birdie meals" only heard of them. Tried baby food, no one will take it. This will be an interesting one to watch :)

I am also interested in this thread. Monty needs to gain a little weight and assuming the vet rules out any medical things I will be interested to see how it goes with you, lol. He also refuses to eat anything that will make his beak messy although he did like spaghetti and the salsa I made the other day. Of course he is a very dainty eater so he doesn't get messy anyway.
You guys gave me a new idea though! Monty will have a fit if he sees me eating pizza and so far in the last couple days I have come up with bird safe chips and salsa and bird safe pancakes. Now I'm gonna try for bird safe pizza!

You could look into Instant Ounces... or rather something like it... I guess the company (Phoenix Unlimited) who makes Instant Ounces went out of business? but there's also Formula One which has the same effects...
Formula One™ Quick Weight Gain Mixture

Formula One is a great product. I use it for week 1 babies when I have to pull that early or incubate hatch. I've also used it on and off for Kiva, as he's always on the low end of the scale. The drawback is that it looks and smells like pancake batter and dries to something you could literally spackle your house with. I feed via a syringe versus mixing with any standing food. You might consider sprouts also, and cooked foods like beak appetite if he'll eat them. I have a fussy eater (kiva) and have to mix a small amount of mash with sprouts to get him to eat it.

Another product I've used to good results is Avi-gain. Lot less fuss there too.
