Nosy Q..How did you afford your Macaw/Too/Grey+cage etc

Did you save up?
Was it a gift?
Did you charge it on your credit card?
Or are you rich and just had the money laying around?

Also I assume most people bought the cage first or at the same time and they cost almost as much as the bird so that is included.

My macaw and U2 & bfa were all surrenders. I only paid for the Macaw's cage. I already had a cage for my U2. My BFA I got everything no charge as tehy wanted him to go to a home with large bird experience and would love him and treat him well! So Out of all 3 fids I paid a whopping 200.00

Tigo's cage, which is a single Macaw cage, I bought at a garage sale! The owner's divorced son tossed it in her garage and forgot about it. Paid 100 bucks and found out when I got it home that it's stainless steel. I danced a bit!

Izzy and Lilly share a double Macaw cage, each get half. I choked up the 600.00 for that lol, but it's so worth it to move the big 'family' table out of the breakfast area in the great room and insure I never have to house another big family Thanksgiving again due to having a huge cage in the 'eating' room. Oh, so worth the 600.00.

The rest of my inside birds have A&E type of double stackers. Not that they're ever really in them, but they all go back when they wish. Those, I got for free from a person closing a bird shop. Well, we don't let Xaf go anywhere he wishes... he gets bound up and shoved into a dirty sock drawer until we need him for something useful like... testing the air in mining caves or something.

Then, I have the rehab birds I take in, and most usually come with cages and assorted odds and ends, but if they're nice cages, I give them to the adoptees that get my rehabs. If they don't take em, I donate them to rescues in my area. Somehow, I always end up with at least a dozen or so 'house' cages. I think they breed. I could seriously open a used bird cage store.

To be perfectly honest, all 10 of my current fids... cost me total $1630. We paid $500 for Lilly's 4'x3'x7' Kings cage and her bottle brush playstand (considering that cage is $1800, I'd say we got a good deal) , $400 for Marti's cage and his 5' tall custom built Manzanita tree stand (with a $500 price tag still on it), $200 for Alfie (long story LOL), $130 for King at Petco, and $300 for Alfie's new cage. Everything was cash and all the other birds and cages were surrendered to us. Not bad considering what the birds we own cost. I couldn't have even bought my two Goffin's for that... let alone the other eight birds and all the cages we have.

I guess my opinion is if you are going to be a bird or animal owner make sure you can afford everything it needs or at least be handy enough to make some things and repair things. I have a rule that credit should not be used on living animals unless it is a vet bill. If you can't afford a vet please don't get a living animal. Just a thought.

Gave up credit cards about 10 years ago, learned to live within my means and work my butt off to get what I have.
