You have GOT to get to know your Walmart produces managers!
A couple of years ago, we went around to all our stores and ask to speak to the produce managers. We told all of them we have birds and if there was produce that they had that couldn't be sold to the public would they notify us. If it was like really bad, they didn't call us but if was just like a bruse on a piece of fruit kind of thing, then to call us. Just this weekend, Walmart called us they had a big huge box of Pomegranates. They didn't sell them and had a new shipment coming in, so wanted to know if we wanted them. Ok course I said heck yes. Our cost? 5.00 for the whole box.... they were still very very good. (And thanks to an article last week on fall veggies, I learned we could just freeze them whole.)
After xmas last year we got 250 pounds of mixed nuts for 5.00! Which we put in the freezer. We get a call about once a week from some store, and it may just be a bag of apples. For a $1, which we do buy, but it is the big deals like the Pomegranates this week that I love! So talk to your produce managers and let them know, some will say no, but most will be glad to help you out.

You will pay premium price for nuts until after Xmas. That is when they want them gone. So call them now and tell them to let you buy up what they don't sell. That goes for cranberries too. We vacum seal them, and then freeze. They keep a WHOLE lot longer that way.
It's not just walmart, our local food stores sell to us too. As do the local farmers. You never know until you ask so we did!
