I had a parakeet once that had to have a beak trim every so often. He had toys and such to 'file' it down with but the vet said it was abnormal so every six months or so she'd trim just a smigon off of it. I must ask, with a beak problem the size of Minga's how do they do this? I know silly questions, but do they sedate the poor baby or is it fearing for it's life for about 10 or so minutes. I can't imagine what's going thru the poor baby's head at that point.

Little by little because we didn't know how long it had been like that and we didn't want to overly stress her out or cause bleeding. It's been a six week process to get her where she is now during which some of it she broke off herself from actually having toys in her cage. The man who had her previously did love her but he just wasn't very bird savvy so she had only one toy made of plastic that he would put peanuts in. We've discovered she really loves to ring bells! We are hoping that with her toys and trimming perches, she won't have to have it trimmed again.
And they just wrapped her up in a blanket and she was very calm and sat still like a champ! She really did very well and afterwards went straight to Daddy to give him lovings and hasn't stopped talking since! She seems very happy with her improvement! |

Will do Red! She's been really happy here... especially when Daddy is home. She still doesn't like me (its really just women in general but its hard not to take it personally! LOL) but I can move her from room to room with our T perch and she has just started talking to me this week so I think that is a good sign. I got to hold her and pet her head when they did the last part of her beak and ohhhhh I didn't know the white skin on their faces was so soft! I hope that eventually she will come around and realize that I'm not gonna kill her LOL
She can eat easier but if you give her something bulky (like a grape) she is having a hard time realizing that her extra piece she used to poke it with isn't there, it's like she's having to learn to eat all over again but she's doing good and we're very lucky to have such a good girl! |
